      Yeah! Salvation run was awesome!

      Best comic of the decade...

On another note, i think covers should have something to say about what actually goes on in the issue, but at the same time, not really say anything about it, for instance, the "battle for bludhaven" miniseries covers come to mind. They all clearly state what's going on yet they dont give anything away.

Also most of the covers from the "war games" story arc, although some of those were rather bad so i should tell some specific ones but i dont really know them so i wont :P

      Cheers!

Hey you guys got a sponsor. way to go! How many times have you seen wolverine on the cover of a comic that he's not in? I rest my case.

    • Bombardem wrote on June 18, 8:53 pm

I think they should destroy the Ultimate universe, and bring Spider-Girl to the MCU as the sole survivor.

I know what Pete means about misleading covers. I've seen things like Wolverine appear on a cover, then never appear in the book more than a few times. Stuff like that is wrong. I do like the oldschool misleading text on covers though. Jack Kirby used to love to do silly headlines, just look at all of the Jimmy Olsen covers he did during the New Gods era. He has Jimmy trying to kill Superman on every cover and in the issue he never does anything like that. I'd love to see a cover artist go retro in that style again. Sometimes the cover art is completely misleading as to the interior art as well, but its harder to pin that one down. Its like porn, I know it when I see it.

    • Uthor (guest) wrote in reply on June 19, 1:09 pm

I like the "porn" comparison. It's hard to define a good cover.

I personally like covers that have elements of the story inside, but with a little bit of comedy (if the story isn't serious, of course...doesn't work for everything). For example, this week's Amazing Spider-Man has Spider-Man running away from The Enforcers in a bumper car, making a quip about needing to get up to 3 mph. You've got Spider-Man, his enemy, and showing that there is going to be a fight in an amusement park, but you also have a little joke to make you chuckle.

If you're going to do "art" covers, they need to by part of a series, like the Sandman covers. Very stylistic, but they work because they're ALL stylized.

The mislead is also fun, if done right. I think the last All Star Superman had a good one. Clark is at his keyboard and his computer reads "Superman is Dead!" While that panel occurs in the book, it's not Clark being confused by what he's seeing or anything, but a tender moment where Superman is trying to wrap up his life. Or, take the cover to The Boys #17. You've got Hughie kissing Starlight inside a bleeding heart, but once you read the issue, you look back at the cover and see a horrible, horrible joke.

Hughie is a man's man! That's what women like.

Once again the download option isn't working for windows, it just immediately finishes. Very frustrating...

Fixed. Thanks for the heads up.

The sponsorship is cool...but I wish you'd bring back the Rambo one..

Also, Fables have the best covers out there in my opinion.

    • Bombardem wrote in reply on June 19, 11:03 am

Well, the idea that they got a sponsor is good, but man I was bred and annoyed with that commercial 10 seconds in and just fast forwarded past it. I much prefer a film trailer ad, or even one of those comic book trailer ads. Watch iFanboy a few times, and see how they do ads. Same sponsors, but different and amusing self-written ads. C'mon, you guys fancy yourselves sketch comedians, lets see some sketch comedy in your advertisements.

Fables covers are indeed pretty awesome! I really like the covers for 100 Bullets as well.

    • Templeton (guest) wrote in reply on June 20, 9:17 am

Yeah it's like how the stars of the Office write all of the commercials that play during their show

    • TheNextChampion (guest) wrote on June 18, 10:37 pm

I cant see why Amazing Spider-Girl even exsists. It's the only story comings from the MC2 universe...and it's not that well written. I would never pick it up, not just because it's a female lead...just cause it's not an interesting story for me.

Action Comics is kicking ass right now!!! I love Johns and what he is doing to make the Superman Mythos, and make it so much better then it was. He can write a good Kent story, and he can write some great fighting scenes. This Brianiac arc, hopefully, will turn into one of the greatest stories DC has ever done.

Salvation Run....another sad reason why DC editorial is suffering so much these days. Plus I agree when the cover has nothing to do with the story...it's so annoying! God I just want a story to reflect the title. When I see a cover with Captain America fighting Red Skull, I hope its in the book. But if it's not, shame on the person deciding what the title looks like!

    • IJones (guest) wrote in reply on June 20, 10:30 pm

Spider-Girl: Like the guys said, it's old school man. DeFalco, Frenz and Buscema are as old school as you can get. And, I say that with with much affection. Simple, straight forward, angst-ridden, action packed fun. The MC2U is stream lined like the Ultimate Universe. Spider-Girl was the nest of the bunch. That doesn't mean those other characters faded away. Uh-uh. They're featured time to time in SG. Pick up those trades and check 'em out.

As far as covers go, I agree about Fables too. Don't forget those old issues of Preacher and Y the Last Man.

I think covers just need to be consistent in there use. Either hint at the story or just be decoratively emblematic of the title

      Hey, Pete!
I know that you said you think that the vids are best when it's the 3 of you, but I'd still like to see you do a vid (maybe once a week?) where you briefly review a comic that you're into. Kind of like what Alex is doing with his Review a day thing. Call it "Pete's Wisdom" and it'd only go for like a couple of minutes. I'm not saying to leave The Stack, or anything like that. Far from it. I enjoy the hell out of you guys. Alex seems to be the cerebral wise-ass. Justin is the quirky fan-guy with a smirk. And you are the raging behemoth of Hulk-like proportions.
Hell, maybe Justin could do one too.
Please Pete, just think about it. You have a lot of fans who'd like to hear more of what you have to say. I know because I'm one of them.
By the way, Alex? Great stuff with the Review A Day thing!
Justin? Diggin' the Captain Action t-shirt!!!

As for the cover art topic, I think it's a case by case thing. As an artist, I love all sorts of comic covers, but I have a real affinity for covers that tell a story in one single image. Letting you know the goings on inside the tome while not giving anything away to the reader. I have to also agree with the comments that Bombardem made about how he'd like to see more of the old style covers. I have to say I miss those as well. It'd be cool to see those make at least a little bit of a comeback.

    • uthor (guest) wrote on June 19, 1:17 pm

I agree with the "porn" comment; it is hard to pin down a good cover.

I personally like covers that show what's going on inside while interjecting a little bit of humor (if the story/title can support it, obviously). Take this week's Amazing Spider-Man. You've got Spider-Man being chased by The Enforcers in a bumper car and the inherent silliness is punctuated with a quip from Spider-Man needing to get up to 3 mph. You've got Spider-Man, his enemy, and the knowledge that they're going to be fighting in an amusement park, but also a light-hearted joke.

If you're going to do stylized comics, it needs to be part of a series of issues or a title of stylized comics. For example, The Sandman covers work because they're ALL stylized.

I also appreciate covers with a mislead on them. Take All Star Superman #11. You've got Clark reading a headline that says that Superman is dead on this computer. Who wrote it? How's Superman dead? Inside you find a panel that's almost identical to the cover, but with the knowledge of the issue, you see it's really a tender moment where Superman is trying to put his entire life in order and is sort of "thanking" Clark for being his alter ego.

Or the cover of The Boys #17. You have Hughie kissing Starlight inside of a bleeding heart. Romance and danger, obviously. However, once you read the issue and look back at the cover, you realize it's really a horrible, horrible joke.

Glad to hear someone else praise the Action book. I only started picking up this series because of the LSH storyline, but I've stayed with the book since because of the high quality. And I'm not even a Superman fan!
And yes, Locke & Key has me eagerly awaiting each next issue too.

    • Uthor wrote in reply on June 20, 3:36 am

Yeah, I got it for the Eric Powell drawn Bizarro story, but stuck with it. LSHs wasn't my cup of tee, though.

Action Comics flat out kicks ass right now.

Amazing Spidergirl #21, Action Comics #866, and Hulk: Raging Thunder #1

Up first it's a review of Amazing Spidergirl #21.  Justin really liked this issue and loves the classic stories it tells in new ways and Alex agrees.  Then Alex talks about why he thinks that Action Comics #866 is one of the best comics he's ever read.  Next it's Hulk: Raging Thunder #1.  Pete likens the setting to a Superwoman-like universe.  Then during the Speed Round we look at  Charlatan Ball #1, Angel: After The Fall #8, Local #12, Salvation Run #7, and Locke and Key #5.  During Viewer Mailbag Andy writes in, "Should covers depict what's in-store for that issue? Pete sounds off on his strong feelings about this topic.  Then Justin and Alex weigh in on what they think about cover art responsibility.  Watch the episode to get all the details!

Be sure to watch The Stack three times a week, and send your comments and questions to tips@pulpsecret.com!
