Having only read a few Spirit comics, and not watching any miller films, the teaser trailer really engaged me. I'm a bit concerned about the plot structure though. Six women vying for The Spirit's affection? There won't be any room for a story, unless that is the story? Bleah! I really respect Miller's comic work. The Dark Knight Returns got me into comics. He seems to have a deep respect for the medium, hopefully this will transfer to respect for the source material, and one of the greatest comic creators of all time.
As always great show guys. I do kind of agree that New Avengers books should be New Avengers books, I guess it would be better if they would just come out with a seperate title to tell these little Skrull origin type stories. Yet, if they can save me three bucks and just tell it in a book I already buy every month that's fine with me too.
you didn't mention the creative team change on CHECKMATE
I can't call myself a fan of The Spirit because I don't really know much about it. However, I can't stomach the idea of another "Sin City" let's make one color stick out design. How are we to appreciate the cool blue trenchcoat if the movie is black and white?
Shouldn't it have a look/feel closer to The Rocketeer? At least that movie had a strong sense of where it came from. I'm not impressed yet.
Yea I felt the same way about the Spirit movie.
This being Miller's first solo directed movie, I think he's going to realize he shouldn't have aped Rodrigez's Sin City style for The Spirit and done something ORIGINAL.
But he's not even doing comics very well anymore, so why would he make a good movie.
I would have agree, but i dont think miller has ever done anything too well except possibly the dark knight books. i cant say i have read all his stuff but so much of his work focuses on extreme violence as opposed to good stories.
I'm fine with the Avenger titles not having the Avengers in it...Weird but we need to know now what the hell is going on in certain places. Plus it's easier to pick up then to try and find yet ANOTHER seperate comic to learn about the Skrulls and Nick Fury.
Good titles though, except for Countdown. Jesus I cant believe it's been a whole year, and the whole did blow up! Horrible, Horrible title...people still are trying to find something good about it, but nothing is good about it. It sucked and no one will pick up the trades. 'Spine of the DC Universe' my ass.
The Spirit movie is something I'm worried about. I do believe in Frank Miller and I think he can make a good movie. Two problems though, one is that I think Miller is going to make it too gritty and violent. Although the trailer doesnt show it, I think Miller is going to give HIS interpretation of the Spirit and not Eisner or Cooke's version. Second is that, who outside the comic group know who The Spirit is? It's a great series and character, but if we tell a random movie audience on who he is...no one could tell us about his history.
i think the name should be (spirit of sin city)
My excitement for the Spirit movie went from very interested to a little worried. My only experience with the Spirit has been with Darwyn Cooke's run recently and I've seen a few examples of Will Eisner's artwork and I didn't get a Sin City vibe. I was hoping for a darker version of the movie Dick Tracy, the setting that is, the characters should be as colorful as the comics.
Checkmate is savvy. Smart book. Always a good read.
NOT excited about "The Spirit" at all. Thank God these guys tagged it for what it has unfortunately become-- Denny Colt wandering through Catwoman's apartment until he gets a phone call, at which point he runs over the rooftops of Sin City. UGH.
I agree about the story in NA #40 veering a bit too far afield. From the preview I saw it looks like that story should have really been in a book called Secret Invasion: Prequel and they could have released it a couple months ago. That being said, its still cool as hell and I'm glad its in a book I am buying and not something extra.
Countdown has done irreparable damage to DC's credibility. I'd bet thousands of readers will skip Final Crisis just because they feel ripped off by Countdown. I know I would.
I was stunned by the Spirit teaser. It looking like a Sin City sequel, not just a little but like it was more Sin City than Sin City was a shocking direction to go with the film. Especially considering the Sin City sequels (yes plural) are coming out in the next couple years. I dont understand why Miller would homage' himself in the trailer. I just hope the high contrast, focus on one color, film noir style was only a teaser choice and isnt how the film itself is done.
But really, Frank Miller has been a douche for a long time now and it wouldnt surprise me one bit if he stole the Spirit and turned it into another 'look at me I'm Frank Miller' project. That's all he's been about the last decade.
i liek pete more and more each time i watch the show.
and pete, if you wanna whoop their arses ill back you up. we can do a team up.
great job guys! there is a skrull back-story slotted for june or july by marvel :P
As far as the whole Secret Invasion goes, i really wish they would just keep the whole thing including every piece of information in their own series/title. Rather then spreading them out through different titles. Fair enough, they are so far keeping them primarily in Avengers titles, of which there are some to choose from now, BUT i still think events should get their own series to run in, rather then being put into existing titles.
At least it is an improvement on Civil War which just had way too many tie-ins spread out in way too many titles.
Nice show but you should have put countdown in the speed round. 2 sec to say it sucked would have been more than enough.
I saw in an MTV interview that Miller wanted wanted to use all the latest film techniques and make the spirit modern etc. etc. But that trailer was soooo 2005 Darling!!!
And black is the new blue apparently or at least the standard clothing color for all redesigned comic book characters. How original...
Sorry but Sin City as a film was very disappointing in itself because it wasn't a film and the dialog was cheesy. It was an MTV video for people which short attention span crammed with too many stories so as to have the most stars in it as possible. And don't get me started on the merchandising.
It has probably been suggested or even done, but I would like to see a top 10 list of the best or highest reccomended titles of the week (or 2 weeks, month whatever) it would help when putting together a shopping list
Try http://www.ifanboy.com FlyingV4, they have an outstanding weekly comic list, really outstanding.
Secret Invasion has proved very interesting thus far. Hoping for more great reveals.
Countdown has just been one big anti-climax. I know it's supposed to lead into Final Crisis, but it felt like filler and a way to just profit on the success of a weekly comic "52 style". Doesn't bode very well in regard to the upcominc Trinity weekly. At least Mark Bagley is involved. If it doesn't do Countdown one better (at least) this could spell the end of the D.C. weekly comic series.
The Spirit film looks cool, but I'd like to see something a little more in the "spirit" (pun intended) of The Spirit. I hate saying that since I'm a huge Frank Miller fan, but this movie looks a bit too derivative of Sin City. Hoping the story is more toward what the books were, but I wanna see Will Eisner's Spirit, not just Frank Miller's version.
hey, i'm actually C. Davis, thanks for the shout outs guys, lol
I think Countdown was only 51 issues.
i was so bummed out when i saw the teaser for the spirit. it honestly might as well have been deleted footage from sin city. the narration in the teaser is the miller voice that i've come more and more bothered by. it feels like an excuse for miller to do another sin city movie. a couple years back brad bird who did the incredibles and ratatouille had actually written a screenplay and it was apparently very much a love letter to will eisner and i'm sure it would've been amazing. what could have been.
awesome duck tales call out... I would totally buy a dark DT ultimate series.
I think you guys should make a bigger deal about which series you are following.. when you are picking up a new series... and when you are dropping a new series.
I'm with Stefan. Hilarious Ducktales reference. I actually used to watch that when I was in elementary school. The Darkwing Duck that came after too. Hilarious.
OMG I remember that Ducktales episode! Haha!
GOTTA get Checkmate, I know it's brilliant, and need to get the trades on FREE COMIC BOOKS DAY! :D
Same exact thoughts on The Spirit. It looks like Sin City, and I would want something different. Seems like a cash-in to Sin City's success.
when i saw the poster i was like "oh cool another sin city" .. and i thought the title of the movie was "my city screams" the poster then says go to "mycityscreams.com" and then when i learned it was 'spirit'.... i was pissed...
it looks like a lamn spin off. and for people that song know SPIRIT is a diffrent story - they wont know its not a spin off. like me..
Id rather pull 'the Batman and Robin Movie' from the one dollar bid then pretend the spirit movie isn't riding the Frank Miller's Sin City - train.
I too got weirded out with the mother lover thing.
