Most important keys to a good LCS, for me, would be keeping it well lit and having employees that both enjoy comic books and aren't douches.

    • Bombardem wrote on April 14, 1:35 pm

Yay, we got THREE reviews of books that not only suck, but once again you didnt like them! Why are you wasting everyones time reviewing shitty comics? There were some fantastic books released in the last week, and coming out this week, what the fuck reason can there possibly be for reviewing BAD comics every show? Not only that, but 2 of the 3 titles arent even ongoing series, why bother? I know its easier to just glom onto these digital preview images that come out from the comic companies rather than actually do any work of your own, but even then there are better choices you could have made.

Here's another helpful tip. Clean the camera lens before shooting...There's a big fucking goober right in the middle of the shot through the whole episode. What happened, a little spooge get away 'shooting' earlier in the day?

now now, its my job to scrutinize these cunts...look on the bright side, they could probaly beat the guys from ifanboy in a fight..(when you are talking about the wad of cum in the middle of the screen are you referring to Justin?)

    • Clive wrote on April 14, 1:36 pm

Watching six minutes of you guys talking about comic books that you feel "Meh" about is not as entertaining as you might think. I'd suggest picking out comic books to review that you feel strongly one way or another about.

As for a LCS... I'd definitely agree with the stuff that you guys have already mentioned. One thing I like at the comic book store I go to is that if I preorder my books from previews, he gives me a fairly large discount. I also definitely agree with jaws that the employees attitudes make a HUGE impact on how I feel about the store. I like to go in there once a week and talk comics for a few minutes while I pick up my books.

    • winterteeth (guest) wrote on April 14, 1:37 pm

I agree with Justin re: displaying your new comics. I have been to some really confusing shops before that make hunting for something not on your pull list a pain. I think the best discounts are the pull list discounts based on amount of comics ordered. Having your customers "subscribe" helps you know what to order (and how much) so give them a break with increasing tiers of percentage discounts. Also, while I don't know about the market in England, it may help defray costs to invest in used CDs or DVDs or something besides comics that would make your shop a "must see" location for all manner of pop culture fiend.

I'm not an uber-hater of Judd Winick like most people. I do like his run on Green Arrow and the great Trails of Shazam title he did. But this Titan's series, oh boy where to start on this....Bad writing, none of the characters feel like who they are. When I see Nightwing I dont see Nightwing, I just see a douchebag with bad one-liners. Plus the art is pretty inconsistant as well, not only that but there are waaaay to much boobies in this thing (lol). I know Starfire is/was a supermodel and other women on here are drawn to be sexy, but man this is overdoing it for me.

I'm starting to get a feeling Pete does not like any stories with space...First Green Lantern, then this Annihilation series. I agree it's not as good as the first mini, but this was still a pretty decent story. Plus you guys will review a bad manga Batman story, but not Grant Morrison's Batman? What the f?

    • Crazy wrote on April 14, 1:54 pm

Now that Alex and Pete are BFF, does Justin feel left out?

    • Moeez wrote on April 14, 2:06 pm

Oh man, comic book stores. Alex is right, you NEED organisation. London's Forbidden Planet has complicated organisation, the new stuff is never in one place. And please, get clerks that actually know the comics and what's in stock, because people in Forbidden Planet have NO CLUE!

    • Weker1 wrote on April 14, 2:17 pm

Most important thing I think is, DON'T BE A DICK!
Every comic book store I've ever been to the people who work there are huge dickheads.
I'd rather Have Sex with a Lawnmower then deal with a shi77ie A$$ Comic Book Salesman, So Guy in UK, Be nice!, thats What I say.
There is nothing in the world worth being that snootie about, Watch Simpsons and do the opisite of everything the Comic Book Guy does.

    • Fonlon wrote on April 14, 2:47 pm

Holy shit Bombardem. you taking bitching to a whole new level. your complaining about a tiny smug on the camera? For a comic book review show! Get a life my friend, and stop posting stupid shit all the time.

    • Tmonk (guest) wrote on April 14, 3:16 pm

You guys make me nervous when you stand during the show. You should start sitting down again.

    • Flail (guest) wrote on April 14, 3:39 pm

Jeez Bombardem, seriously? A barely visible camera smudge has got you all riled up? That's about as nitpicking as it gets buddy, find a better way to spend your time.

    • Bombardem wrote in reply on April 14, 4:27 pm

Yeah, its too much to expect the lens on a video show to be clean...my bad. I guess I shouldnt expect that to be any more professional than the rest of the show.

    • scorp87 wrote on April 14, 4:34 pm

For everyone who is upset over them reviewing "bad comics"(Bombardem), I think you should lay off that. I don't think the guys are going out of their way to review bad comics, it's just how they felt after reading them. You had two number one's out last week, how are we supposed to know whether they're good or bad when it just came out. Plus, I WANT to know what's bad so I can steer clear of it. For someone who's on a budget, knowing what's good and bad is plus, so my thanks to Alex, Justin, and Pete for letting me know what's what.

    • Bombardem wrote in reply on April 14, 4:49 pm

Thats just a ridiculous statement. You WANT them reviewing bad books? Sheesh, the show could take all day. Hell, they may as well just do an all DC show...

    • deadenderic wrote in reply on April 14, 5:02 pm

      I agree with you scorp
There is a lot of crap out there and Im glad the Stack is out there to protect us from wasting our money on crappy comics. And if all they did was give positive reviews I wouldn't really respect their opinions as reviewers.
      Anyway
I'm pretty excited to see all the interviews from the comicon. Good luck!!

    • scorp87 wrote in reply on April 14, 9:09 pm

I didn't say I want them reviewing bad comics, I said I want to know when something is bad. They pick three books each episode to review, if one is bad I want to know about so I can steer clear of it. What I WANT is to hear that all the books were good. But that's an unreality because not everything is going to good. I, actually, like comic books, all kinds. Not just Marvel, like some. Not just DC. All kinds, and I want to know what's good and what's bad. Oh, and stop taking things out of context.

    • AndySc8s24 wrote on April 14, 6:19 pm

keep it clean, organized, and most importantly keep the focus on comic books. i understand that allot of comic fans are magic, yu-gi-oh, or what ever other games are being played but i find it really annoying when the gaming seems to be more important than the comic books in a COMIC BOOK store.

    • Dave (guest) wrote in reply on April 15, 12:23 pm

I agree with AndySc8s24. Every comic shop I've ever been in has also sold toys, and multi-sided dice, and collectible card games. It's like they're trying to be the Walmart of Dorkdom. It's kinda like when I was a kid and would walk into a head shop looking to buy some rolling papers and maybe a Bob Marley t-shirt and I'd inevitably be accosted by the weirdo who was there to buy an 18" double dong and a ball gag. Potheads and Sexual Deviants shouldn't be forced to shop in the same store, and neither should Comic Readers and RPG Nerds. If I go to a comic shop, I want to buy my issue of Jughead and leave unharrassed. I do not want to have to talk to some guy about his +12 Hackmaster.

    • Bombardem wrote in reply on April 15, 1:51 pm

Yeah, I never really understood why comics moved out of the bookstore environment and into the game store. When I was a kid in the 70's if comics , new and collectible, were both sold in either retail book stores or Used book stores. In fact the only true comic shops we had in my area in the 70's were contained in a chain of used bookstores. I hate game geeks, particularly Magic the Gathering feebs. The last shop I used sold ugh...beanie babies...

    • J.Yo (guest) wrote on April 14, 6:21 pm

seeing as i actually live in county durham i think the most important suggestion for opening a new comic shop is giving me a job.

oh and dont be a twat like the people who work in forbidden planet. what a bunch of tools they are.

    • marcelo. (guest) wrote on April 14, 8:58 pm

      actually rio de janeiro, brasil
and we have some comic shops with windows
and organization, just so you know...justin. ¬¬

    • Bret (guest) wrote on April 14, 10:32 pm

There are two things that make a good comic store (and most comic stores get them wrong)
      1) Make sure your subscribers never miss an issue of the comics on there pull list. It’s easy to fill your subscribers bins each week with the items on there list and it’s the reason why your subscribers come to your store. If they start missing there favorites, they’re going to go somewhere else.
      2) Most importantly… Friendly staff behind the counter. I hate when I walk into a store and I get the feeling like I’m bothering the punk behind the counter if, god forbid, I should ask him a question or ask him to cash me out. Friendly staff means repeat customers.

    • ANARCHcorp (guest) wrote on April 14, 10:49 pm

What's the most important thing in a comic book shop?

I actually worked at my LCS here in Guadalajara, Mexico and let me say this the shop is pretty succesful because of two things.

      a) Alex is right the place needs to be clean and organized. When I started working there it was a dungeon and we cleaned it up and the sales went up..that's about it.

      b) Hire nice friendly people. When people walk into a comic book shop the last guy they wanna deal with is "Comic book guy" from the Simpsons who has to show his a bigger nerd than you before he helps you in any way shape or form.

Like any business the people element is KEY

    • NobleHero (guest) wrote on April 15, 12:08 am

For the new comic book store owner, after we moved it took me over a year before I moved my pull list even though my old store was now 30+ minutes farther away than my new local store and there was no reason for me to head in that direction other than the store. One of the big reasons, the old store bagged and boarded everything for me at no extra charge. When I picked up my pull list, everything was waiting for me safe and secure. It was extremely convienent.

The owner was also a pretty cool guy, which helped as well.

    • Stormbreaker wrote in reply on April 15, 12:24 am

I used to work at a Comic store, and boarding and bagging your subscribers books is a good idea. Friendly employees also good, try not to make your customers feel like A-holes for buying certain books or asking merchandise related questions. Know your merchandise, and be willing to give recommendations.

One thing I would add is try and keep the atmosphere family friendly. While its good to have loyal customers who come in and discuss comics, its another thing to have them being extremely foul mouthed. Kids are going to want to come into a comic book store, so you want to try and keep it as "kid friendly" as possible to parents eyes.

Also, someone posted above to keep the focus on comics. Thats a good idea, but stocking other items such as ccgs, rpgs, and toys is a good way to pull in extra business. Have weekend gaming tournaments. You would be surprised how easily a gamer can get hooked on comic or vise versa.

One last thing, the UK equivalent to dollar and quarter bins are a must. Yes they take up space, but its a great way to get new and young readers into the hobby for cheap.

    • tastyrick (guest) wrote in reply on April 15, 11:28 pm

Dollar and quarter bins are actually a nessecity for most shops as a way to unload excess product. The sheer volume of new material can overwhelm your storage space very easily.

    • grandmasterwook wrote on April 15, 6:38 am

To the guy openin the shop in durham, you should definatly try to get involved in the british indie comic scene. A lot of good stuff is out there.

Go to a couple of conventions and get to know the creators, most of us do good sale or return on our books.

And on the books reviewed this issue, i liked the titans and thought it was a solid first issue, especially compared to some 1st issues i've read. But i expect a lot more from the series.

Thanks for another great show guys

    • Dean Trippe (guest) wrote on April 15, 1:09 pm

Yeah that new Titans book is full of awful. Just terrible and sad. There are so many amazing creators out there, and they stick two of my least favorite on my FAVORITE characters here.

Side note: The Titans lineup is the one Eric Canete chose here, and this single drawing is more interesting and exciting than the entire first issue of Titans Together.

PS - It's pronounced "Aqua Lung." I promise.
PPS - I managed a comic shop in Georgia for a few years and quadrupled sales in my first three months. If you need any help, drop me a line. ;)

A friend of mine and myself are actually planning to open up our own comic shop and we have found time and time again that if the store is run like a business and is a clean and friendly environment, then it should be successful because there are so many shops run by lazy collectors who don't care or by douchebags who don't know crap about comics. You won't get rich but you can make a living off comics if you are passionate about the medium and have good customer service skills. And luck helps too. By the way I have no problem with gaming being in the same store as comics, the two are very closely related and you can bring gamers into comics if you have them in the same environment.
