I would rather see suttle product placement then some of the old crappy sexual crap. Any one remember New X-Men #118 when they made a game out of trying to find the word sex on every page. As long as it can go with the story line I'm cool.
If Pete LePage says the word "LIKE" one more time I am going to slit my wrists.
Pete: It's like, really cool when, like--
Alex: THAT BEING SAID . . .
Jason: Waaka waaka waaka! ;)
I think a little product placement is ok. Like if there's a billboard in the background while spidey's swinging through New York. But anything beyond that is just lame.
Mack put MC Chris on Hawkeye's shirt because they are friends (on myspace). Mack did the art for MC's new record too. Its pretty great.
Since I'm in marketing (gasp!), I can't say product placement is a bad thing. In fact, it's a sensible way to help offset some costs. But it's like you guys were saying; it's all in how it's done.
i think subtle product placement can actually be kind of fun (Clint's t-shirt being a good example). Like Justin said, if a character seems to like the same thing you do, it's kind of cool.
The problem is that if a company is paying for their product being shown, they want to be sure people see it. That's generally when you get the glaringly obvious stuff that makes the comic come off like one of those old PSA-type issues (remember the ones they used to have about smoking for example?)
It's tough balance, but I think it can be done well. And the added revenue stream will hopefully mean more comics.
We dont need product placement what so ever! Hello has anyone look at comics today? About a third of a comic is ads, so why the hell should there be more advertisement in the actually comics? I mean we can do a joke or something, like how Joe Q put Stephen Colbert's South Carolina Campaign on a billboard in Spider-Man. That's ok for me, cause it's funny.
But we got enough advertisements in comics already, we dont need anymore. As for the episode, I'm shocked that anything Wolverine is good right now! Origins, this title you reviewed, and Logan...all are pretty damn good right now. Amazing considering three months ago we all wanted (except Pete) to get them cancelled because how terribly written they were. Also good to know Last Defenders isnt bad after two issues, gotta catch up on it.
If you are Blue Beetle fan on www.veoh tv you will like (Kamen Rider Ksbuto) take a look and have fun. It very good men of the Stack if you like to see blue beetle live go to veoh and look up (Kamen Rider Ksbuto).
There's no need for product placement, and any product placement is bad.
Naked Mystique with guns however... not so bad.
I have the feeling that most of the stuff you discuss is kind of the boring part of comics; avengers, jla, ff4; not very interesting. Now I understand that a lot of people DO find that kind of stuff interesting, but to put a review on Fables, the work of Warren Ellis or an indie title once in a while wouldn't hurt the show. Keep doing the works though!
Until Alex said it I hadn't realized just how non-active the Wildstorm universe is right now. Besides the Armageddon, Revelations, Mark of the Beast stuff there is nothing happening really with Stormwatch, the Authority or WildCATS. Those relaunches never quite took off, huh? I am enjoying the occasional limited series (and the dearly departed Stormwatch PhD). What a dropped ball.
Well this episode was LIKE really stupid. LIKE my IQ was LIKE plummeting everytime LIKE Pete spoke LIKE. Its LIKE Pete was LIKE beaten with LIKE a verbal crutch LIKE.
I like product placement. I dont really understand the problem. If they can make a buck that way instead of raising the price I have to pay, fine, put a product in every panel. Its not like EVERYWHERE we turn there isnt half a dozen brand names in our face anyway. Why not have our comics reflect that fact? I mean just sitting here at my desk I am seeing no less than 50 brand names, logos, or product names. So seeing one or two brand names in a comic book isnt going to distract me, or take me out of that world. It's just petty critical whining to bitch about things like that because you are too stupid or cowardly to actually make an intelligent critique of the actual comic.
Once again we are blessed with 2/3 of the reviews being of 'meh' books. Why are you guys wasting your time and ours reviewing SHIT? Half a dozen GREAT books came out this week, why dont you tell people about those? You guys spend more than half your time talking about books that are mediocre, and you know they are mediocre. Why? I dont watch shows like this to hear about the books I SHOULDN'T buy. I want to hear about great books that I might be missing. If a book is shit then put it in your Speed Round and give it to Pete for a 3 second "It Sucks" review.
At my house my oldest daughter has what we call a "like" tax. She must pay us 25 cents every time she says the word like. Pete would be broke after today. Also, Alex get a new sweater or get that little stain of the grey one. Its driving me crazy.
The rest of the show was great, keep up the good work.
She wasn't naked guys.
Here's the proof

you have page in the book you can put them in a ,why put them in the story
Frankly, I liked the Authority and the Wildstorm Universe a lot more before they tried to relaunch as part of the DC Multiverse. The 52 Earths of the Multiverse is totally at odds with the concept of the Bleed and the snowflake multiverse from Authority and Planetary (the comics geek moment). And when will we see the the real final issue of Planetary, Warren Ellis? *feh*
As to advertising and product placement -- I'd rather see more ads for seamonkeys and x-ray specs than product placement in COMICS! You can't get away from ubiquitous advertising even in movie theaters or the sides of buildings or highway signs or mall bathrooms. I don't want product placement in my comics.
Anyway, it makes me nostalgic for the old Twinkies ads...
Stu
I think they should product place With like RC-Cola and Sam's Choice, Just stick to the generic Brands!
Though The idea Of Wolverine sittin on a Bike Rack Shirtless drinking a Diet Coke sounds fun!lol
Was that refrence to dated?!?
Way to ramble on endlessly and add nothing to the conversation Pete. Seriously where the hell were you going with that? You did make me giggle though.
It’s been bugging me for a while but I think it’s time to speak out.
After totally misunderstanding Alex, Pete, you add:
“OK. Well anyways. My point is that like… I feel like this was a bad example of a crossover and a first issue just because it’s like… um… you know… it’s, it’s, it’s doing a whole bunch of nothing and then at the end of the issue you’re like ‘what?’ instead of like… being like… oh, oh this is building into something. It’s just like what on top of what, on top of what.”
What indeed Pete! Care to explain that in English sometime? Every episode you seem to let your emotions get ahead of your brain and vehemently denounce something quite incoherently. It’s fine raising objections, but not if…you know… like… um… you don’t know how to explain yourself. Just disagreeing with something without a coherent explanation or shaking your head while Justin or Alex are explaining themselves is getting a little boring. I do enjoy your participation, don’t get me wrong, but try not to be just reactionary all the time.
Aside from that I still really love these shows so please keep them up three times a week. I enjoy the camaraderie, the humour and the reviews and the good natured differences in opinion – getting hard to come by that more and more, especially on the web. Still a great show so keep it going and thanks to all three of you for the many hours of entertainment so far.
ignore the haters, pete. you are a special brand of special. pete is the balki to your perfect strangers, the phoebe to your friends, the arnold to your willis... without his particular brand of crazy the show just wouldn't work.
but i do agree that you guys should review better books... and have bigger balls about pointing out how bad some of them suck.
Yup that was a weird like fest. I am going to blame Justin, because he brought up teenagers. I think I became possessed by a cheerleader. A Walk-in moment.
Things that we don't need..product placement and lion rubbing.
More often than never it takes away from the story and makes it seem like they just try to hard to slap this label on the comic book (Old Spide inside the Hulk's stomach, C'mon I seriously dont think the Hulk eats deodorant) I realize the comic book industry needs to make money but there must be other ways.
isn't it bad enough that you have to wade through endless pages of ads everytime you pick up a mainstream title? product placement in the story is bullshit.
i enjoy the show, but i would like to see more indy reviews.
I just dont believe that product placements are noticeable, let alone disruptive to the reading experience. I dont see anyone complaining about Cable. Now theres a living product placement. I mean his powers have nothing to do with holding up bridges, or transmitting television signals, or sending telegrams. His powers are telekinesis, and telepathy. So why is he named that other than to advertise the cable companies? I hear they are gonna name the baby Comcast or Viacom, they havent decided yet...
Some product placement is fine when it adds verisimilitude to the comic world. If Wolverine walks into a bar and orders a Molson Canadian rather just a "beer" then it makes the story more believable.
So this means having the occasional bill-board and other signage in the streets of new york is cool, because there is you know, billboards and adverts all over the city.
If the product placement is worked into the story in a funny way (ant-man's old spice) it is good. Or in a way that makes sense for the story like, Ant-man's Wii. I'm not even sure if that was paid product placement, or if the writer just wanted a Wii in the story because he thought it was a fun thing there. That
s the way it should be
