I'm glad Alex came forward and said the Legion story was boring.

You should have showcased Tim Bradstreet's cover(s) on Ellis's Punisher a little bit. He deserves more exposure. He's probably the best artist no one ever hears about in the Marvel line-up.

Spider-Girl is one of the things that ticks me off about the whole line of 'spider-man cant be married' logic behind OMD. Obviously you CAN write entertaining stories with an adult Peter Parker...

Thunderbolts is an interesting attempt at making a villain book, though redemption is a heavily recurring theme throughout the run, then again so is betrayal and ulterior motives, and big evil plans.

I couldnt agree more about Emma Frost. Even though she has been an X-Man for what, 15 years now? I still cant get beyond the fact she's an evil bitch who always seems on the verge of screwing everyone over for her own gain. It's just a matter of time. I wish Phoenix would show back up just long enough to kill Frost and Cyclops mid-doing it, and then kill herself in some manner that we would be absolutely certain never to see any of them again.

I know Marvel is chasing after a younger audience, but seriously, I hate 'Young' anything teams. This whole Young X-Men, Avengers, whatever never works and never lasts long. I much prefer the Initiative style of introducing new adult characters. They should keep the 50 State program around, in the background of Iron Man, SHIELD, Avengers, etc. Its a great way to bring new characters into the Marvel Universe with very little fanfare.

dc villaians would always make good mini-series especially guys like lex luthor and joker i can never get enuff of them.
As for characters that serious revamp would be like hawkman and hawkgirl and some other dc characters that have been around longer than my grandmother. ( i cant remember most of them off my head cause hawkman's various incarnations still give me an ice cream headache.
AND I JUST GOTTA SAY THAT I REALLY LIKE THE SHOW BUT COME WHERE R THE DC REVIEWS WE GOT ONE IN THIS SHOW AND THAT WAS A SUPERMAN BOOK. I LOVE SUPERMAN BUT THERE ARE OTHER GREAT DC STUFF TOO. ITS LIKE ALL I SEE R LAME (and some good) MARVEL BOOKS. i WONT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE INDIE BOOKS THO. COME ON MORE DC REVIEWS! please...

    • Bombardem wrote on April 7, 12:56 pm

I'm guessing you are a big fan of DC's writing...

    • deadenderic wrote on April 7, 1:10 pm

Great mix of titles on this episode guys.
Thanks for keeping the show 3x a week!
I think that Apocalypse could have his own title. He's my favorite villian and I think if done well, it would be interesting. They had a mini series in the past but that was mostly a origin story.

Wow! I can't believe people found the Legion story boring! I actually enjoyed the heck out of that arc. I hadn't bought Action in AGES before this team! Ah, well!

I'm also a bit surprised people didn't mention the Eclipso series from a ways back. The art got a little weak toward the end, but there was definitely no redemption of the villain happening in that series!

    • imaginary dave wrote on April 7, 1:34 pm

now that its been suggested, a lex luthor or joker standalone series seems like something that should have been done ages ago.

    • Bombardem wrote on April 7, 3:12 pm

Welcome to Comic Book History 101....they were done ages ago. I bought Joker #1 - 5 back in the 70's and still have them. Lex Luthor: Superman's Nemesis came out in the 90's. Neither series lasted long.

    • Avin Harr (guest) wrote on April 8, 12:47 am

there was a lex luthor mini series couples years ago called lex Luthor: man of Steel and theres an upcomin joker project, but you can never have enuff of those villians

    • imaginary dave wrote on April 10, 1:11 pm

so it sounds like something that should have been done ages ago because it was done ages ago. neat. i can predict other things that have already happened too.

    • deantrippe wrote on April 7, 1:40 pm

Pete for the win. All-Star Bats is TOTALLY an ongoing villain series...aaaand shows how poorly that focus works.

However, I could see reading an ongoing starring The Hood.

    • scott (guest) wrote on April 7, 2:17 pm

okay i have learned an IMPORTANT LESSON about the stack. if they are lukewarm on a title DO NOT FREAKING BUY IT.

i picked up young x-men based on their review... worst book ever. what drives me crazy about a lot of comic titles is that you can't even begin to evaluate them on questions like story, character, coolness, style because you can't get past the fact that they're just poorly written.

anyway, i felt like their review *hinted* at the fact that the book had amateurish dialogue, but damn... i can't believe they didn't just warn me away completely.

in general, i feel like they are too easy on most books. anyone else notice that?

other than that, best podcast on the web. you guys hit the freaking jackpot with your style and i don't know who is the mastermind behind the format... the focus on keeping it short... and the high-quality production value... but you guys are knocking it out of the park.

now if you could just stop being pussies about your reviews. guggenheim CAN'T WRITE. just say it.

Alex when will Comic Book Club be up? I need to erase that Evan Dorkin shmuck from my memory!

    • Alexander Zalben (guest) wrote on April 7, 3:18 pm

Later today! Working on it right now...

    • TheNextChampion (guest) wrote on April 7, 2:29 pm

I think if anything, this Legion story help revitialize the team! They have been so boring and a non-factor in DC for such a long time. Johns did, I think, I great job showcasing why DC needs the Legion and why they are a big factor whether it's the present or past.

I guess Kirkman has failed since Amazing Spider-Girl gets more press then Walking Dead. Ugh I do love that line though Alex: 'A Universe so small that it only contains this title'. It's funny cause it's true.

    • Clive wrote on April 7, 2:44 pm

Good show guys. I think Alex is boring >:O Action Comics is great.

I'd like to see a comic about the Juggernaut, where he just football tackles people over and over, saying "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch". That would be a good comic.

    • michael (guest) wrote on April 7, 3:38 pm

Boo! To that girl who says that Sabrina is bad, it's actually quite fun now. :)

I also agree with Alex on the way the X-Men are written. It's one of the reasons why I basically left the books years ago. A large part of the x-men stories nowadays are simply, making characters good, then bad, then good....

I also agree with Justin on the Batman villains. I think they are interesting b/c so many of them have the theme of not really wanting to be evil, but life's circumstances directed them that way and they eventually they had a choice to make.

Finally, no. I will not wear Alex like a hat. ewww...

Great shows guys, keep it up! ;)

    • J.Yo (guest) wrote on April 7, 5:08 pm

Id love to see another hood series. im worried that maybe ecause of the whole secret invasion hes gonna be put on the back burner.

definatly get the hood another series. and get BKV to write it again.

punisher is a murdering vigilante. get over it.

    • stephen (guest) wrote on April 7, 5:33 pm

i's love to see a flash's rogues minseries, because i thought that that was what slavation run was supposed to be. also i'd definitely enjoy lex luthor, darkseid, sauron(from the x-men), eclipso, and sinestro

    • joseab (guest) wrote on April 7, 5:34 pm

one great story where the hero is the "villain" is Mark Millars WANTED he never gets redeemed stays evil throught out the whole book and its pretty kick ass (pun intended) if i do say so myself

    • naimad89 (guest) wrote on April 7, 10:32 pm

i must say i disagree with alex on the whole white queen situation. I think that the writers know that we know eventually she is going to turn on the x-men, therefore they play with her character. I truly believe that she fully good and she has to show that to those around her and us who read. If a writer does make her commit some sort of betrayel i personally will never read a x-men book again.

    • Bombardem wrote on April 8, 12:34 am

Can I also add that Justin's primping, pimping, and posing to the camera while other people are speaking is not only distracting, but a little narcissistic and vainglorious. I'm sure there's a monitor in front of you guys so you can make sure your all in frame and stuff, and its like he's posing in front of the mirror the whole show. Very weird.

    • grandmasterwook wrote on April 8, 3:38 am

The jokers had a couple of titles, 2 being devils advocate and Last laugh which where both awesome.

Also Eclipso had his own series, cant remember if they had him as a villain in it as i only picked up a couple of issues.

And there was the whole Villains united series which led to secret six having their own mini. Mon' the villains

    • Bombardem wrote on April 8, 4:55 am

It's funny, I was just over on Pirates Bay tonight and someone had just put up the original 70's Joker series 1-9. Isnt serendipity weird?

    • ColdContagious (guest) wrote on April 8, 10:53 am

Can anyone tell me if Spawn is any good these days. I'm not a big horror comic fan, but i am enjoying the new Darkness series so far.

    • TheNextChampion (guest) wrote on April 8, 11:18 am

I disagree with that the Legion is boring, I thought John's did a great job with the group. This arc in Action Comics, and the JLA/JSA Lighting Saga proved to me that the Legion can be exciting. I think John's proved that the Legion can be fun and be important to today's DC Comics.

But it is a sad day when Spider-Girl gets more attention then Kirkman's Walking Dead. But Alex had line of the day: 'A universe so small that it only contains this title.' It's funny cause it's true

*oh FYI: I had to write this three times, for some reason the comment box for me isnt working. Has anyone solved this yet guys or not?*

    • redlitez76 wrote on April 23, 10:17 am

the joker had a ongoing series back in the 1970's i think his first issue he double crossed the royal flush gang.

Punisher Max #56, Amazing Spider-Girl #19 and Action Comics

We're liking Gary Frank's artwork in Action Comics #863, but Alex takes issue with the level of excitement in this issue.

The we've got another sneak review of Amazing Spider-Girl #19, a title we haven't yet reviewed on the show. It's pretty well done, but deals with a very small sphere of the Marvel universe.

And in the speed round we check out Reich #2, Cable #2, Young Avengers Present Wiccan & Speed, Anna Mercury #1 and Walking Dead #48.

In the mailbag, Ian asks us if there can be good villain books where the hero remains a bad guy throughout the book and there's no redemption. Find out what we think in this episode.
