Cool show (three a week is a great way to go!)
I don't know that it counts as a "graphic novel" per se, but I picked up Monkey Vs. Robot by James Kochalka the other day and it's a really beautiful little piece of storytelling. Deceptively simple-looking art, minimal dialogue and a really strong emotional punch.
And Pete: don't take crap for liking something like Bookhunters (which I intend to check out). It seems to me SOMEONE on that panel is very fond of a character called CYPHER. I won't name names.
Since we are reviewing graphic novels I have one that is really worth a look, its called Almighty. I reviewed it in the forums, but no one read the review, go figure. Anyway, its a self published 180 page book and you can preview it at
http://almightygraphicnovel.com/
The art is just great, and the story is fantastic and much bigger than just this volume. I started reading it and couldnt put it down til I'd finished the whole thing, and wanted more. Great book.
with final crisis to coming out soon. i have some questions. will dc explain how the antimontor body survive the first crisis and was floating in space and no one notice it. what happen to the body when the tower that was build with it was destroy? how lady quark return form the dead after being dead for 11 yrs. how the green lantern corp has superboy prime fingerprint or dna when they didnt know he exist? im totally confuse about what is going on in dc. can u help me understand what is going on?
There are forums for questions like this.
you really should link to every comic you mention in the sidebar.
Good thought. I'll do that right now.
Hope you guys do three shows a week again. I enjoyed each one.
I've been reading a lot of Hellboy trades, the ones that Mignola drew the interior art in are all great.
I'm trying to think of a graphic novel that I love that was not originally released as comics and is not Watchmen.
I've got a lot of favorite trades though: Walking Dead, Y: The Last Man, Preacher, Bone. All good stuff.
Loved the 3 shows this week by the way. I hope you guys will continue to do this.
I'll have to check out those Graphic Novels. Batman City of Crime by David Lapham is amazing and takes a long time to read because of the mass amount of content. One of my favorites of all time that I have read again and again is Shaun of The Dead by Ryall and Howard. It follows the movie pretty close and the art is absolutely fantastic.
I'm thinking back to the classic, original graphic novel from Marvel in the 80's. Has there ever been a better X-Men story than "God Loves, Man Kills"? Has She-Hulk ever looked better than she did in John Byrne's MGN? Sorry, Pete - I know how much you hate "sexy" She-Hulk, but my then-14 year-old hormones were no match for my sense of gender sensitivity - oh, who am I kidding, I still love the green cheesecake.
Starlin's Death of Captain Marvel, Emporer Doom, new Mutants - all great. A few of them were klunkers (Starjammers, Dazzler) but overall, that was a terrific run!
One quick question for you:
Would you guys consider the oversized, Treasury Editions from the 70s as Graphic Novels? Superman vs Spiderman, Superman vs Wonder Woman, all of the golden age and silver age reprint and origins books were pretty influential to pre-teen reader me. Do you guys remember any of these?
my favorite graphic novel is probably box office poison. it's great.
great show guys. 3 times a week is the future and i died when i saw that it said pete suckz.
3 times a week for sure!!
Pete'Z was right about BookHunters. check it out
also there must be something about battle royale because even the subtitles in the movie are freaking awful. it's like no one even went back to see if it made sense or flowed well.
graphic novels i'd shout about : maus 1 and 2 and the collected nemesis the warlock, possibly al of zenith, if they ever let books 2, 4 and 5 out of that warehouse.
great show, please do 30 a day! now that stage 6 has bit the dust ive nothing else to watch.
you should do at least one 24 hour marathon of constant streaming live comic book chat with guests and stuff, for, like charity or something.
this is known as a 'gauntlet'.
My favourite Graphic Novels are Transmetropolitian, Hard Boiled by Frank Miller and Sanctum from DC comics. These are definite must reads for mature comic fans.
What are your favorite mature comic titles?

Woo-Hoo!! Third Show, Third Show!!! :D
The graphic novel that got me back into comics again was David Mack's "Kabuki" series. Volume 7 is due out sometime soon, so if you guys haven't read any of it yet, there is a big of catching up to do. The art is volume one is rough, but the writing is great from the first volume to the current one. (Note: Since I had been out of the loop for so long I'm not sure how popular this work was when it originally came out, so if I'm beating a dead horse I apologize.)
Hey Guys,
Love the three shows a week! Love the graphic novel reviews! I can't really afford a weekly pull list, so I've been sticking to reading graphic novels and trades mostly, so this is super helpful.
If we're suggesting sweet stuff to read, I recommend Tekkonkinkreet by Taiyo Matsumoto. I usually steer away from manga, but this is a pretty epic and fun story. If you like Scott Pilgrim or Pirates of Coney Island, I highly recommend. The movie wasn't half bad too.
Keep up the nut ripping!

Awesome show! I love it when you review graphic novels versus single issues! Thanks guys!
3 shows looks like a winner to me. a guy could get used to it...
I'm with Pete on his Black Hole review. It's a great concept for a comic and the art is spot on but at the end the whole plot and execution is a little hard to digest as whole.
Cool three episodes. I would like to hear some personal recommendations at the end of the shows. Could you also do more Spider-Girl reviews because it's an awesome title and is written superbly
funnykay
It'd great if you guys put more pages/covers of the books your reviewing up there while your talking about them. Much as I love looking at mutton chops, funny kid and Pete it'd be nice to literally see what your talking about.
Great!! A graphic novel special!!
Thank you guys, specials are always awesome.
The you tube comic reviews from fans are awesome! I may even try to do one myself(although none of the comics I am reading are published in the US)
I recommend you to pick Stan Lee's & Moebius' Silver Surfer: Parable. The story ain't so bad(even though it's stan lee), and the art is just amazing.
Keep up the great work!
three a week is great! you should do more shows! awesome!
Bookhunter was amazing (Although I might be biased because I am a librarian)
Have to say, you guys are growing on me. It's actually a good day when I log in during lunch and see a new episode. Kepp up the good work, and keep having fun.
Oh, favorite graphic novels??
"PREACHER", "100 Bullets", and "Supreme" by Checkerbooks.
Favorite non-obvious graphic novel: The Coffin.
A scientist designs a mechanical suit to contain his soul after death. He meets a violent death. His daughter is taken captive. The suit is his chance to save her.
Sci-fi, action and pure poetry.
A currently unknown great graphic novel is Almighty. Its completely self published, drawn, written, inked, etc by the creator. You can see a review and links to view it on the forums here

Batgirl: Year One is what i just read and have been immensley impressed with. Really entertaining version of the origin story and fantastic artwork too.
I can't really think of any Graphic novels outside mainstream stories and ultimate marvel that i have read, none of the "indy" ones have been that memorable to me so far sadly.
I think the guys should definately do more Graphic Novel reviews both of indy stuff and mainstream stuff.
For whatever reason Graphic Novels are gaining a respectability that comics have never been able to achieve, thus causing a resurgence of the artform that everyone is trying to get a piece of. A large reason being GN's are creator owned, and a hell of a lot easier to buy and sell the film rights to compared to one of the Marvel, or god help you DC franchise books.
Now you see films not just buying GN's to film, but if a GN doesnt actually exist they hire people to create them and release it prior to the film, as was done with Cloverfield, and some other films coming out this summer.
Whats different however is an altogether new genre, or at least a forgotten one, the serialized novel adaptation. I think this comicization of Stephen King's Dark Tower and Gunslinger novels could be the beginning of a whole new Age if it continues to catch on like it has. In fact it could possibly signal the end of the superhero as the primary subject of comic books, finally. We'll see. It will end up being decided by our other subject, digital comic sales. Until they begin selling comics digitally they'll never diversify on a large scale.
