Countdown #49 - Give Dini A Chance!
May 23, 2007
Okay, to all the haters, let me just say one thing: I liked 52. I’m not saying all 52 issues were great. But there was a lot to enjoy, such as:
- Booster Gold being a huge jerk and then getting flash-fried
- Lots of people on the road to crazytown – Black Adam, Dr. Magnus, and my favorite, Ralph Dibny.
- Renee Montoya/Batwoman
- The desert island vacation resort/prison for mad scientists!
So having enjoyed 52, I was perfectly willing to give Countdown a shot. In fact, I expected...

The Most Memorable Gadgets in Comics
July 31, 2007Gadgets are fundamental components to the world of comics. Any superhero or supervillan worth its weight in super powers, has some bit of technology that makes his or her life easier (while sometimes making the lives of others more challenging).
Contained here are 10 of our favorite comic gadgets. These are the things that inspired us as kids, the cool devices that perhaps compelled us to grow into the giant dorks that we are today. The criteria was simple and wholly scientific: we went with our...

More Comic Movie Casting News, Hulk Style
July 27, 2007While not nearly as exciting as the news of the full Watchmen casting list being broken over the last two days, still noteworthy is casting news regarding the Incredible Hulk movie sequel, as well as news of which villains the Hulk will be fighting (although we all know good and well there’s not many good Hulk villains to choose from.)
The villain in this sequel will be the Leader, and will be played by Tim Blake Nelson, last seen playing Kevin Munchak in The Astronaut Farmer. Not exactly a major coup,...

Spandex Overload: "JLA" Movie in the Works?
July 30, 2007
I’ve long said that the comic book movie that was in the most need of being made, out of the characters not yet tapped for a live-action movie, was "The Avengers." I would put "Justice League of America" as a close second. If the rumors are true, a live-action "JLA" movie may be happening.
Word has it that Kieran and Michele Mulroney have been tapped by D.C. to pen the script for the movie. One obvious question springing from this news is will Routh/Bale play Superman/Batman, as one would...

Cormac McCarthy on Toy Story 3
July 31, 2007
So I'm a few days behind the curve on this one, but it's no less valid. This past weekend while stumbling down St. Mark's fueled by bourbon and red bull (and Chinese food), I happened across the latest issue of Village Voice.
Contained within was a combination of two of the things most dear to me in all of creation: comic and Cormac McCarthy. Comic artist Ruben Bolling's McCarthy-esque imagining of "Toy Story 3" was, while not perfect, a fitting homage to the great word smith:
An Oprah-fueled...

Batrumors: Animated DVD Feature to Bridge "Batman" Movies?
August 7, 2007
A production document seems to have surfaced (assuming that it is legitimate) that details plans to produce an animated straight-to-DVD Batman feature to be released just before the release of "The Dark Knight." The project will apparently be PG-13 and will bridge the stories of the two movies.
The document states that this "brand-new adventure follows Batman as he unravels a mystery over six short stories done in the style of Japanese anime." The document also places the talent of Josh Olsen,...

DC vs. Marvel: Eisner Awards Edition
August 6, 2007
D.C. had a huge night at last week's Eisner Awards, racking up 13 awards at the event dedicated to excellence in the comic book/graphic novel fields. Notable among the awards the comic publisher took home were Best Single Issue, by Jeph Loeb and Darwyn Cooke for “Batman/The Spirit #1,” Best Continuing Series by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely for “All Star Superman” and Best Limited Series by Paul Pope for “Batman: Year 100.”
Marvel did not fare so well on this night, taking home a paltry three...

Baby on Board the Fantasticar?
August 6, 2007
Marvel’s had a pretty damned good success rate in transferring their prized properties over into movie form, with the obvious exception of the turgid "Fantastic Four" movies. While there were a couple other bad Marvel movies that suffered from bad direction or poor execution, the FF movie franchise just felt like an exploitative cash grab to me. Now Jessica Alba is talking about where she’d like the writers to take her character for the third movie. Just kill me now so I won’t have to see it.

Who Wants to Return to Riverdale?
August 6, 2007
This concept just illustrates the idea that you cannot predict anything in this world. In this jaded, cynical time we live in, I would have never dreamed that Archie comic properties would be popular enough to make money on. Apparently, I was wrong.
Several Archie projects are either out now or on the way (so we hear) down the pike. The 1968 TV series was just released on DVD, IDT Entertainment just bought a 5% stake in Archie Comics Entertainment with the hopes of developing animated TV and...

What Happens (With Iron Man) in Vegas...
August 8, 2007
It’s beyond common knowledge now that Favreau is making the highly anticipated Iron Man movie (a movie that looks better and better with every passing day,) less known is that Favreau is working with Adi Granov to create a limited series Iron Man comic titled "Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas".
The director apparently got involved in the comic when Granov, who had been involved in the movie approached Favreau about the project. Marvel has stated that the comic will not be a standalone one-shot, and...

Marvel DVD Game Takes Kids to a Prison Break
August 8, 2007
If a product wins an award before it is released, it must be doing something good. This is exactly what has happened to a brand new Marvel product out now: an interactive DVD / trivia game featuring its famous universe of characters.
The game is called “Marvel Heroes Breakout,” and allows 1-4 players to clean up a prison break and rescue a city. Players choose from the iconic stable of Marvel characters (including of course Spider-Man, X-Men, Hulk and others) and control the action with a DVD...

Thor Snatches Director
August 10, 2007
It’s no secret that next year is going to mark a red-letter year for comic movies. We all know the franchises that are hitting the screen, and we (as comic fans) are extremely excited about most of them. When news of a Thor movie broke it didn’t seem inherently interesting, but that has changed with the naming of Matthew Vaughn as director. Don’t get me wrong, I like Thor (although I liked Beta Ray Bill more) as a comic character, I just felt the project was rife for mediocrity in the wrong...

Colbert Comic Catastrophe
August 9, 2007
I’m a huge Stephen Colbert fan, so I absolutely had to pick up the first issue of the “Tek Janson” five issue miniseries from Oni Press at the comic store the other day. I was hoping to be able to give a ringing endorsement to the comic featuring my favorite political pundit, but such is not the case.
Fans of the show will recognize the character from the “Tek Janson” cartoon that is shown sporadically on “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central. The cartoon is voiced by Colbert, and is always...

A Beatdown of Marvelous Proportions
August 15, 2007
Fans of the old Capcom-produced Marvel video games rejoice! EA Chicago has released a press release giving some details on a new Marvel-themed fighting game, due sometime in 2008 (most likely holiday quarter, when 90% of big name games release.)
I’m typically not excited when I hear about any EA project, given that they are really the Fox of the video game world: obsessed with the bottom line and not terribly concerned with ruining licenses (Marvel Nemesis, I'm looking at you.) The Chicago studio...

Arcades Still Exist?
August 15, 2007
More comic-book-meets-video-game news in the pipeline today with Marvel and Powerplay Entertainment, LLC (a coin-op arcade machine developer) agreeing to a three-year licensing agreement to span 12 games featuring Marvel characters. Old-school fans of comics and gaming will surely think back to the brilliant 1992 X-Men arcade game and hope fervently that the new games deliver the same level of quality.
While it is surprising to see arcade-game licensing deals in this day and age, there is...

The Ultimate Upcoming Comic-Book Movie List
August 16, 2007
We’ve been covering so much comic-book movie news around here lately it’s hard to keep in focus exactly how many are in the works. To really get a handle on it one needs to put it in list form, so here we go. Titles are roughly organized in the order that we are likely to see them release. By this count, we have 22 announced movies that are either in some sort of production or recently announced as well as eight movies that were announced, but have lost steam as a project or have disappeared...

Doctor Strange to Remedy Movie Rumors?
August 16, 2007
This one is looking tentative at the moment, but the fanboy in me wants it to happen so badly that I will ignore my good sense and write about it. Rumors are circulating today that Marvel will be making a Doctor Strange live action feature film. IESB is claiming an exclusive reveal, but until it’s substantiated by another source, I’m calling it a rumor.
Dr. Strange would be an excellently adaptable character to the screen, particularly with the recent “magic-fantasy” boom in popular culture...

Johansson Gets Spirit-ed Away
August 17, 2007
Frank Miller's big-screen adaptation of Will Eisner's classic "The Spirit" franchise just got a lot hotter with the announcement of Scarlet Johansson to the cast. The Hollywood bombshell will reportedly be playing femme fatale secretary, a character with ties to the villain (The Octopus) played by Samuel Jackson, in the upcoming film.
Much like Gwyneth Paltrow, Johansson has the perfect look and frame to play a 1940s period female lead, and should bring the right feel to the character (Paltrow, in... -
"Mercenaries" Transition to Print
August 26, 2007
In a world where seemingly every popular comic book and video game characters end up being adapted to film, and many comics get adapted to video games, it is rather surprising that more video games don't get adapted to comics. It happens, but not nearly as often as the other crossovers do. Lucasarts' Mercenaries video-game franchise is ready to make the leap, however.
It isn't exactly the most obvious property in the world of video games to make the leap, as it has a rather generic game world. A... -
The Collectapocalypse
September 18, 2007
The Collectapocalypse has begun.
Like so many other rabid comic book collectors and purists, it is absolutely essential to my very sanity and self-worth as a person that every single issue I own is in pristine, virginal supermint condition. It is also inherently imperative that each issue must stay in said condition until the bitter end of time itself, a frozen image of perfection, encased in a protective shell that would make Han Solo jealous.
Covers must keep an unmolested luster bright enough...

Best of 2007?
November 14, 2007
Amazon.com has posted their "Best of 2007" list for graphic novels, comics, and comic related books.
Now while I don't disagree with any of the choices, I do think these were picked more for a cross-section of types of books rather than the actual quality of the volumes.
The list is, in order:1. Stephen King's Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born
2. The Perry Bible Fellowship: The Trial of Colonel Sweeto and Other Stories
3. The Complete Peanuts 1963-1966 Box Set
4. MAD's Greatest Artists: The... -
NYCC Day Two Pictures Updated
April 20, 2008Sunday is winding down and I've just posted some photo updates from Day Two at New York Comic Con 2008. I have to say I really enjoyed the final day of New York Comic Con a lot. Friday may have been my favorite, but with the slightly decreased crowd it was much easier to get around and much easier to talk with the artists and other comic book creators. My only dissapointment was not bringing enough money to get sketches (or signing up for commissions early). For any who don't know (and that...
