World of Warcraft Raids Your Comics Store
July 27, 2007With the extremely popular MMO World of Warcraft reporting its 9th million subscriber today and already successfully migrated into lucrative trading card game, clothing and accessories ventures, game developer Blizzard is now taking its digital crack into comic book form with the help of DC.
No word yet on whether Leroy Jenkins will be a character (sorry, couldn’t resist) but the series will be written by fan favorite Walter Simonson and drawn by Ludo Lullabi and Sandra Hope.
Blizzard is well known...

D.C. Lands Heroes License
July 27, 2007D.C. Comics has landed another huge license after nabbing the World of Warcraft property earlier this week, following an announcement that they would handle the rather inevitable comic treatment of the massively popular superhero-themed show Heroes.
The hardcover collection will translate the 43 comic stories featured on the Heroes website last season. Also noteworthy is that the cover art duty will be handled by two of the masters of the art, Jim Lee and Alex Ross. The transcendent beauty of Ross’s...

Spandex Overload: "JLA" Movie in the Works?
July 30, 2007
I’ve long said that the comic book movie that was in the most need of being made, out of the characters not yet tapped for a live-action movie, was "The Avengers." I would put "Justice League of America" as a close second. If the rumors are true, a live-action "JLA" movie may be happening.
Word has it that Kieran and Michele Mulroney have been tapped by D.C. to pen the script for the movie. One obvious question springing from this news is will Routh/Bale play Superman/Batman, as one would...

Itsy Bitsy "Spider-Man 4" News
July 31, 2007
While it may have been inevitable with the sheer amount of money the Spider-Man film franchise has made for Marvel that there would be more sequels, one thing we didn’t know was whether the creative team would be intact. Things are looking positive as Raimi, perhaps the most important ingredient in the films success, has stated a desire to continue to contribute to the franchise.
“I want to help contribute to the production,” said Raimi in an interview with Empire. “I don’t know if I’ll just be...

Terrance Howard Talks Iron Man
August 1, 2007
The beauty of the “X-Men” and “Spider-Man” movie franchises was the fact that it made it desirable and attractive for big name, high talent actors and actresses to play our favorite comic characters. In a sense, those movies made it cool to be nerdy and brought comic books out of the basement and into the mainstream. This fact has opened the doors for the fantastic and talented casts that make up the upcoming “Hulk” and “Iron Man” movies. I certainly never expected to see an actor of the caliber...

American Comics Liberty Union?
August 2, 2007
And now, for something completely different. The (strangely) polarizing ACLU organization is entering the world of comics. While many died-in-the-wool Republicans will surely scream “indoctrination,” the ACLU wants to motivate young people to care about the causes and ideals that are core to our nation’s development and philosophy.
Starting on September 5th, the limited edition run titled “Defenders of Freedom” will debut, split into two stories: “Blue Collar,” created by Rick Burchett and...

Luke Cage Versus Black Panther, Round One
August 2, 2007
By now we are all very aware of the current crusade within movie making to transfer every single character from the comic universe onto the silver screen (I’m personally still waiting for the Booster Gold, Speedball and Jubilee film treatments.) Adding to the pile comes either a Luke Cage or Black Panther movie, depending on which one John Singleton makes first.
In an interview with Blackfilm.com, Singleton expressed his long-time fandom for the Marvel universe as well as his desire to bring a...

Who Owns the VALIANT Universe?
August 3, 2007
It’s extremely difficult to find any comic book fan who was engaged in the culture in the 1990’s that didn’t fall in love with VALIANT comics the moment they picked them up. Created by Jim Shooter to challenge the monopoly Marvel and D.C. held on the industry at the time, the company created a stable of characters and stories that quite frankly blew away anything that was going on at the time (and are still a step above 99% of most titles in quality even today.)
After six years of stellar books...

Paltrow “Signed in Blood” for "Iron Man" Sequels
August 7, 2007
After the debacle of watching the quality of "X-Men 3" descend and implode before our eyes during the production process via the full weight of worldwide-fanboy-Internet scrutiny, it’s extremely refreshing to watch the reverse happen with "Iron Man."
Everything looks so perfect from every update, reveal and announcement that I’ve finished breathing sighs of relief long ago, confident that this thing is going to be spot on when it releases, but I still can’t resist obsessing on every piece of news...

Batrumors: Animated DVD Feature to Bridge "Batman" Movies?
August 7, 2007
A production document seems to have surfaced (assuming that it is legitimate) that details plans to produce an animated straight-to-DVD Batman feature to be released just before the release of "The Dark Knight." The project will apparently be PG-13 and will bridge the stories of the two movies.
The document states that this "brand-new adventure follows Batman as he unravels a mystery over six short stories done in the style of Japanese anime." The document also places the talent of Josh Olsen,...

DC vs. Marvel: Eisner Awards Edition
August 6, 2007
D.C. had a huge night at last week's Eisner Awards, racking up 13 awards at the event dedicated to excellence in the comic book/graphic novel fields. Notable among the awards the comic publisher took home were Best Single Issue, by Jeph Loeb and Darwyn Cooke for “Batman/The Spirit #1,” Best Continuing Series by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely for “All Star Superman” and Best Limited Series by Paul Pope for “Batman: Year 100.”
Marvel did not fare so well on this night, taking home a paltry three...

Baby on Board the Fantasticar?
August 6, 2007
Marvel’s had a pretty damned good success rate in transferring their prized properties over into movie form, with the obvious exception of the turgid "Fantastic Four" movies. While there were a couple other bad Marvel movies that suffered from bad direction or poor execution, the FF movie franchise just felt like an exploitative cash grab to me. Now Jessica Alba is talking about where she’d like the writers to take her character for the third movie. Just kill me now so I won’t have to see it.

Sin City 2 Delayed, Fans Cry in Dismay
August 8, 2007
Lost in the massive, chaotic shuffle of Comic-Con were many buried announcements that are just being sifted through in the last week. One such announcement that was missed (at least by me) was word on the greatly anticipated “Sin City 2” by Frank Miller.
Miller revealed that he and Rodriguez have written the script and are ready to shoot, but that “issues” relating to the Weinsteins have held up production. Given the rampant success of the first movie, as well as the success of Miller’s “300”...

What Happens (With Iron Man) in Vegas...
August 8, 2007
It’s beyond common knowledge now that Favreau is making the highly anticipated Iron Man movie (a movie that looks better and better with every passing day,) less known is that Favreau is working with Adi Granov to create a limited series Iron Man comic titled "Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas".
The director apparently got involved in the comic when Granov, who had been involved in the movie approached Favreau about the project. Marvel has stated that the comic will not be a standalone one-shot, and...

Warren Ellis to Helm Hulk/Iron Man Miniseries
August 13, 2007
With Hulk and Iron Man being the hottest two characters in the Marvel universe right now for both the upcoming movies and their roles in the amazing storylines of World War Hulk and Civil War, it doesn’t look as if things will change at all next year. Not only will the movies be released, but Warren Ellis and Casy Nord will also be helming a six-issue “Ultimate Hulk / Iron Man” comic book miniseries next year.
In an interview with CBR, Ellis talks about the project, which Joe Quesada...

One Can Never Get Enough Ash
August 13, 2007
There has arguably never been a character as cool and beloved in the geek universe as Ash from the seminal horror franchise “Evil Dead.” Now, such geeks have a reason to rejoice as Ash will see print again in a six-issue miniseries in November titled “Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash,” as revealed in an announcement at WWC on Sunday.
Having recently seen print in the recent, quirky-yet-fun “Marvel Zombies vs. The Army of Darkness” comic run, Ash is back on the forefront of geek culture again. This...

Webslinger Wedding Woes?
August 14, 2007
Spider-Man has had a busy year in the comics so far between being unmasked and getting Aunt May shot in the process, and with the “One More Day” storyline looming on the horizon things are apparently looking to get much bleaker for Parker.
Readers of Spider-Man have obviously noticed the extensive foreshadowing of Aunt May’s imminent death (call me cynical, but this is long overdue.) Early art of the “One More Day” storyline, however, seems to be hinting towards another split between Parker and...

The Ultimate Upcoming Comic-Book Movie List
August 16, 2007
We’ve been covering so much comic-book movie news around here lately it’s hard to keep in focus exactly how many are in the works. To really get a handle on it one needs to put it in list form, so here we go. Titles are roughly organized in the order that we are likely to see them release. By this count, we have 22 announced movies that are either in some sort of production or recently announced as well as eight movies that were announced, but have lost steam as a project or have disappeared...

Doctor Strange to Remedy Movie Rumors?
August 16, 2007
This one is looking tentative at the moment, but the fanboy in me wants it to happen so badly that I will ignore my good sense and write about it. Rumors are circulating today that Marvel will be making a Doctor Strange live action feature film. IESB is claiming an exclusive reveal, but until it’s substantiated by another source, I’m calling it a rumor.
Dr. Strange would be an excellently adaptable character to the screen, particularly with the recent “magic-fantasy” boom in popular culture...

Johansson Gets Spirit-ed Away
August 17, 2007
Frank Miller's big-screen adaptation of Will Eisner's classic "The Spirit" franchise just got a lot hotter with the announcement of Scarlet Johansson to the cast. The Hollywood bombshell will reportedly be playing femme fatale secretary, a character with ties to the villain (The Octopus) played by Samuel Jackson, in the upcoming film.
Much like Gwyneth Paltrow, Johansson has the perfect look and frame to play a 1940s period female lead, and should bring the right feel to the character (Paltrow, in... -
Justice League of America Beats Up Superman
August 18, 2007
Well, sort of. Yesterday saw some infinitely interesting information come out regarding a massive hurry-up by the Warner studio of the Justice League of America movie, potentially pushing back or abandoning the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel sequel. Odds are, between those two options, this news only signals a push back of the Supes solo story, considering much work and money has already been pumped into the project. Officially, Warner Bros. contends that Man of Steel is still on track, which is all...

Misery Loves Spidey
August 20, 2007
Marvel has posted more teasers on their website concerning the hotly-debated upcoming Spider-Man storyline "One More Day," releasing in roughly two weeks. As discussed last week, the conventional wisdom surrounding the event is most likely a divorce with Mary Jane or her death. I'm not counting out the possibility of an Aunt May death, though, considering the comic has been more than hinting about that in it's story arc.
Now to add more fuel to the rumor fire, here's a quote from J. Michael... -
Jon Favreau Loves You
August 20, 2007
Yes, he really, really does. Despite his busy schedule finishing post-production on "Iron Man" to get it out to us ravenous fans, he's still showing the love by promising to bring us the full, HD trailer that was shown at SDCC (for those of us not lucky enough to see it in person.)
The promise was made via Favreau's Myspace forum yesterday, and here's the full quote from the man himself:
"I hear you all loud and clear. You want to see the footage that we brought to SDCC. Why not post it in HD... -
D.C. DVD Release Dates
August 21, 2007

For the kid in you, or for those of you that are kids, Warner Home Video has announced release dates for "Batman: The Complete Fourth Season" and "Teen Titans: The Complete Fourth Season," with both DVD collections hitting shelves on November 20th.
Beyond the collected episodes, the "Batman" set will include a Batman: Season 4 Unmasked featurette highlighting "Robin, the Boy Wonder." The DVD extra will detail how the series creators settled on this version of Robin as well as detail the... -
Sam Jackson Talks Spirit, Nick Fury
August 22, 2007
Sam Jackson is a busy man. In addition to all the "normal" movie roles he finds himself in, one could make an argument that he's the James Brown of Hollywood... the hardest working man around. Of course, one of those projects is the upcoming "Spirit" movie directed by Frank Miller. Another project that could happen in the future is a stint as Nick Fury.
Quint over at AICN got Sammy J. on the phone for an interview to talk mostly about his new movie but managed to get some questions in about the...

JLA=CGI?
August 23, 2007
Word on the street Thursday has it that the upcoming Justice League of America movie will not, in fact, be a live action movie. Rather, IESB is reporting on what sounds to be fairly reliable rumors that the movie will be a CGI/motion-capture affair. This could make for an interesting movie feel (I've actually always wanted "Kingdom Come" to be done in this manner on screen, so this is probably as close as I'm ever going to get) and would obviously make it easier to pull this movie and "Superman...

Miller Scores Another Bombshell
August 26, 2007
Frank Miller apparently gets the ladies. One week after the announcement of Scarlett Johansson to the cast of "The Spirit," comes news of another curvaceous actress to the troupe, that of bombshell Eva Mendes (marking her second comic-book film role, the first being in "Ghost Rider.") Not a bad one-two punch of femininity to put on screen, by any measure.
Mendes will play the Spirit's love interest, Sand Serif. From the sounds of it, casting is set and the crew is projected to begin filming in... -
JLA Movie Rumors Continue ...
August 27, 2007
This week has been absolutely abuzz with D.C. comic-movie news, and today is no different. Following up on the JLA mo-cap/CGI story from earlier this week, IESB has done a little more digging on the situation and is now reporting that JLA will be a mix of CGI and live action, with the CGI being used to render the OMACS and the underwater scenes. Good news for those fans who were terrified of the prospects of a wholly CGI movie.
Also reported today is that Routh and Bale will not play Superman and... -
Shia LeBeouf, Last Man on Earth?
August 27, 2007
The film adaptation of "Y the Last Man" seems to be picking up some steam this week, with director D.J. Caruso sitting down to an interview with MTV to report on the future of the movie. Notably, he spoke on the format of the movie, indicating that the film would focus it's entire length and breadth on the first 12 issues of the long-running series. Also noted is that Caruso is interested in Shia LeBeouf in the role of Y, and that Shia is interested in the role.
"This is funny, but unbeknownst... -
Hulk Tour '07, Destination: Toronto
August 27, 2007
A bit of news regarding the new "Hulk" movie has surfaced that will be of great interest to our friends who live in or near Toronto. If the word on the street is correct, anyone near that city next month could have a chance to go and watch a piece of the film get shot. I'm not talking about any mundane, run-of-the-mill dialogue scene either. I'm talking about a fight scene. Small spoiler (that probably everyone expects) in the next paragraph.
The fight scene in question is a fight scene between the... -
"Spectacular Spider-Man" Teasers
August 27, 2007
Marvel has posted a trailer for the upcoming "Spectacular Spider-Man" animated series, which will premier on the WB in 2008. I love the old-school webbing under the arms look, it's a very nice touch to the aesthetic. Certainly a show for the younger audiences, but it certainly couldn't insult older Spidey fans any more than the dancing scene in "Spider-Man 3" already did.
Comics Continuum is also reporting that Venom will (not surprisingly) be a villain in the series, but won't appear until... -
Superman Returns ... With a Better Movie
August 28, 2007
It's funny how the comic book/movie rumor mill works. Two weeks ago, it was a streaming flood of Marvel news, one piece of news after another, day after day. This week has decidedly been a D.C. week, with no signs of stopping today with a new "rumor" regarding the anticipated return of Singer behind the camera of "Superman."
Film Ick is reporting this is more than a rumor, citing that this comes from reliable inside sources, and given their track record, I believe them. From the sound of it, the... -
Diamond Dumps Valiant
August 28, 2007
It is always a shame when intellectual-property law interferes with fans and their favorite comics. Old-school Valiant fans have narrowly dodged that bullet, with Newsarama reporting that the highly anticipated "Harbinger" hard-cover edition has been dumped by Diamond Comics Distributors. The decision is due to the intellectual-property debate that has been ongoing between two companies that are claiming the rights and the understandable position of Diamond, not wanting to be caught in the...

Marvel Eats Your Brain
August 28, 2007
Depending on your perspective (and quite possibly your view on comic-universe continuity) you either loved or hated the Marvel Zombies story arcs — except for people who don't read Marvel and didn't care, but even then, there was probably an opinion in their brains as to whether it was an awesome or stupid idea. This Halloween, Marvel is going to give everyone a reason to praise or hate on the concept further with a slew of new and old zombie-related titles.
The major announcement made by ... -
Another "Dark Knight" Leaked Scene
August 30, 2007
As usual, minor spoilers involved ... pretty minor this time, so don't worry too much about learning anything you didn't want to learn. If you "have to go in fresh" to the movie, turn away now.
This is by far the coolest "Dark Knight" scene I've yet seen leaked, because we actually get to see something blown up! Fox Chicago posted this video of a former candy factory getting blown up for what is undoubtedly a climax scene in the film.
The building, in the film, will apparently be portraying Gotham...

JLA Rumors Get Crazy
September 3, 2007
In an age where it is finally attractive for established big-name talent in Hollywood to play superhero roles in movies, it's getting harder and harder to tell the genuinely possible casting rumors from the blatantly made up casting rumors. In point of fact I did not actually know where to land on the newest JLA casting rumors that began circulating two days ago. You know the ones, that Mel Gibson is signing on to work with Miller again, and that the Gyllenhaal siblings are signing on to dress up the...

"Spider-Man: Friend or Foe" Preview
September 4, 2007
Marvel has posted a news story on the upcoming Spider-Man video game, which actually looks pretty sweet. For those that haven't been keeping up with the Activision-produced Spider-Man games of the past few years, they are a cut above the usual comic-video game quality and get better with every release. Amid the typical Marvel, overhyped language in the blurb (where they assure us it will be a "sure-fire hit"... we will be the judge of that, Marvel!) is some info that gives us a real idea of what...

Comics > Movies
September 20, 2007
It is, on one hand, great that our favorite (and even not-so-favorite) comic characters are getting remade in premier, big-budget movies. On the other hand, it's not so great when we walk out of the theater disappointed. Even worse is when we voice said displeasure over such movies, we are often labeled as fanboys (or girls) who are simply impossible to appease. I am here to tell you all that it is not that we are impossible to please, but that comic book to film transfer cannot possibly please us...

Album to Comics Story
October 4, 2007The transition of music albums to comic books is not an unheard of phenomenon. Recently, a Neil Young album was transferred from the auditory to the visual, becoming a graphic novel entitled "Greendale." It wasn't the first music album to be reimagined into the comic art form, but it got us thinking... what other great albums out there in the annals of musical culture that would make good transfers into the comic book medium? Our criteria often bled beyond simply picking albums that provided a direct...

Free Comic Book Day Comics - Revealed!
February 15, 2008
Spoiler alert! The Free Comic Book Day website has updated their offerings for May 3rd, the official national holiday for our favorite past-time. You can check out the list here, but I'll copy in some highlights:
- X-MEN—FCBD 2008 EDITION by Mike Carey & Greg Land: Once again, Marvel releases an original by a super-star team for FCBD. I think even the Greg Land haters will be okay with a free issue. Maybe not.
- HELLBOY/B.P.R.D.—FCBD 2008 EDITION by Mike Mignola & Various: Also on the original...

Comic Con Day Zero Photo Update
April 17, 2008
Want a sneak peak of the convention. Well you get what you ask for. I made it by this afternoon to pick up my Press pass and take a spin around the Javits Center before the crowds give the place the bum's rush tomorrow. Can't go to the convention? Not to worry, I'll be covering the whole thing and posting pictures to our Pulp Secret Flickr account and the blog here at Pulpsecret.com periodically. Be sure to check back regularly for updates!
