Superman Returns ... With a Better Movie

POSTED BY Kenneth England, 28 August 2007

It's funny how the comic book/movie rumor mill works. Two weeks ago, it was a streaming flood of Marvel news, one piece of news after another, day after day. This week has decidedly been a D.C. week, with no signs of stopping today with a new "rumor" regarding the anticipated return of Singer behind the camera of "Superman."

Film Ick is reporting this is more than a rumor, citing that this comes from reliable inside sources, and given their track record, I believe them. From the sound of it, the script and pitch for "Superman" is so good that it won't get pre-empted or ignored in favor of "JLA," which is good news. Spoilers abound from here on out, so beware.

The whispers from Superman fans that I have been hearing since the first movie seem to be answered, as it sounds as if Brainiac will accompany Lex Luthor as the token villains in the film. My personal knock on the first movie was that it wasn't big enough ... Luthor versus Superman isn't inherently exciting. A Superman movie needs super-powered villains to be truly compelling, so this is an improvement over the plot of the first immediately.

Spoiler No. 2: Jason dies. Thank God. Singer got some sense and wrote that embarrasing plot point out of the movies. No one needs to see a Superboy subplot; it was trite, cloying and unnecessary, so now we have two immediate improvements over the tepid plot of the first movie.

This sounds to be exactly what fans wanted in the film in the first place. The first film had the right feel, the right aesthetics, the right cast but the wrong plot. There was too little action ... scenes of "Superman being Superman" were far too few and far between, and the pace of the movie was far too slow. Looks like these concerns have been addressed by Singer and looks like he's back on the right track, and thankfully the execs agree. Finally, I can get excited about this project.

Hopefully they get rid of Jason. His presence will only "dumb down" the movies as he gets older. I can picture it now Superman 3: Superman and Son [shuders]

YEAH THAT SUCKED ASS BIG TIME. I DONT KNOW WHAT SPRINGER WAS SMOKING ON. SPRINGER
      SAID IN HIS INTERVIEW,
      HE WAS NOT AN SUPERMAN
FAN, SO I TAKE IT, IT
      WAS ALL ABOUT THE $$$
      AS USUAL.

"Luthor versus Superman isn't inherently exciting"

... this isn't true. Take a look at the first movie and you know it hasn't to be a supervillain just a good movie to get the audience excited. The new Superman movie has bad pacing and a bad script. The original showed how to make a great superhero movie without supervillains.

I'd rather see Superman fight a superpowered villain than a human villain anyday. It's just inherently more interesting and exciting to me. So perhaps I shouldn't say that Luthor isn't inherently exciting, but that it's more compelling to see a superpowered villain.

DOOMSDAY IS THE SUPERVILLIAN, READ UP ON HIM. HE IS THE DESTROYER OF MANY PLANETS. HE HAS AN EVIL EMPIRE OF SOLDIERS SUPERMAN CANT HANDLE, AND HE'S STRONGER THAN SUPERMAN

I love all things Kevin Spacey, so I'm hoping he has a big part in the next superman. Though yes, I agree, they need a better villian. and a dead child

i think Brandon has a smaller physique than those starred as Superman before, most especially Christopher Reeve (RIP). He's still the perfect Superman actor for me. Brandon also looks younger than the age we perceive Superman to be in. Although I must admit he really got the looks and the moves. At one angle he looks like a younger Christopher Reeve.

I AGREE, BUT HE LOOKS MORE LIKE CHISTOPHER REEVE VIRSON OF CLARK THAN SUPERMAN...
