Shia LeBeouf, Last Man on Earth?

The film adaptation of "Y the Last Man" seems to be picking up some steam this week, with director D.J. Caruso sitting down to an interview with MTV to report on the future of the movie. Notably, he spoke on the format of the movie, indicating that the film would focus it's entire length and breadth on the first 12 issues of the long-running series. Also noted is that Caruso is interested in Shia LeBeouf in the role of Y, and that Shia is interested in the role.

"This is funny, but unbeknownst to me: Shia was already chasing this part prior to anything," Caruso said. "I haven't talked to him yet about it, because he's off shooting 'Indiana Jones 4,' but Shia is the right type and the right personality because you want to have the humor, but you also want to have the seriousness. So we'll talk about it when we get there."

This could be an interesting movie adaptation, but not exactly the type of story that I expect to see go very mainstream. Perhaps fans will be interested in the treatment, but I can't really see this story being a breakthrough hit the way traditional superhero movies sometimes do.
