Arcades Still Exist?
More comic-book-meets-video-game news in the pipeline today with Marvel and Powerplay Entertainment, LLC (a coin-op arcade machine developer) agreeing to a three-year licensing agreement to span 12 games featuring Marvel characters. Old-school fans of comics and gaming will surely think back to the brilliant 1992 X-Men arcade game and hope fervently that the new games deliver the same level of quality.
While it is surprising to see arcade-game licensing deals in this day and age, there is nothing surprising about the stable of characters announced. The lineup consists of the obvious choices: Spider-Man, The Hulk, Iron Man, (an obviously not-so-dead) Captain America, X-Men and Fantastic Four.
The companies plan to stagger the releases to coincide with movie premiers, likely stocking the machines in the theatres for maximum cross-pollination.
"Every person – young and old – has an inner child who feels nostalgia towards these popular heroes who transport us to another dimension with their story lines. The agreement with Powerplay allows us to market our characters through the latest gaming systems and extend our brand in a space or location from which we have been disconnected in recent years," said Paul Gitter of Marvel Entertainment.

Long live arcades!
I wish... I miss the old days of pumping $50 of quarters into machines all day.... mmmmm.... Heavy Barrel *sigh*
You know, I would be so happy if they released the old X-men arcade on Xbox Live Arcade. It was so much fun to be elbow to elbow with 3 other X-friends going against Magneto, "MASTER OF MAGNET!" :)
