Who Wants to Return to Riverdale?

POSTED BY Kenneth England, 06 August 2007

This concept just illustrates the idea that you cannot predict anything in this world. In this jaded, cynical time we live in, I would have never dreamed that Archie comic properties would be popular enough to make money on. Apparently, I was wrong.

Several Archie projects are either out now or on the way (so we hear) down the pike. The 1968 TV series was just released on DVD, IDT Entertainment just bought a 5% stake in Archie Comics Entertainment with the hopes of developing animated TV and direct-to-DVD features based on the Archie characters and there is a Betty and Veronica movie in the works.

Who is all this for? Certainly, generation X and Y don’t care at all about these characters (I would be shocked in this day and age of cultural unawareness among the young if two people out of 10 under the age of 20 could even name them if they saw them.) The generation that grew up with probably doesn’t care about them anymore anyway, at least not enough to spend money on them. Perhaps someone out there working the demographics numbers knows something I don’t, but these projects seem to be in a “no-mans land” wasteland of a lack of interest.
