The Week in Comics: Everyone Else
[Every Friday, we'll post some of the best and worst of the week. You weigh in below, let us know what YOU think.]
Title: Invincible #43
Recommendation: Borrow It
How it Compares to Last Month: Even
Why You Should Pick it Up: We LOVE Invincible with a burning passion that can't be denied, and yet, this issue is just set-up. Which means that if you want to follow the next seven issues leading up to #50, this is just spinning wheels. We find out a little more about Invincible's brother's super powers; Allen the Alien makes a welcome return; and more boring stuff happens with the Guardians of the Globe. We even end with a fun splash page that, nevertheless seems totally out of character. Any issue of Invincible is a worthy read, it just doesn't seem that things will start heating up until next issue.
Title: The Boys #8
Recommendation: Read It In The Store
How it Compares to Last Month: Down
Why You Should Pick it Up: Yet another quiet issue for this book, we find out a little more about Butcher, and Wee Hughie is coming to grips with killing a man. This is a bridge issue for the hilarious #7, to what might be a little more slam bang #9, and it feels it. Not a lot happens, both plot and character wise. There's still some good jokes (the prim and proper reaction of the butler after getting his ear ravaged; Tek-Knight hiding his costume under a rug; reverse strip-poker), and yet the issue feels about half of any other issue of The Boys. Too bad, as the series came out of the gate running after moving to Dynamite.
Title: Jack of Fables #12
Recommendation: Read It In The Store
How it Compares to Last Month: Down
Why You Should Pick it Up: After last month's return to the "Snow Prince" story-line, we get back to the main story of Jack's escape from Mr. Revise and his evil librarians. The biggest problem with this issue? Jack selflessly helps people after a car crash, with no apparent agenda of his own. What have you done with our Jack?
Title: Crossing Midnight #8
Recommendation: Borrow It
How it Compares to Last Month: Down
Why You Should Pick it Up: This book is hugely inventive and fascinating, but nearly impossible to keep track of. Every issue, there are dozens of characters, gods, and demons introduced, with no sign of letting up. With all that, it's totally unclear where the book is going. Which, in itself there's nothing wrong with, but with this issue, having the main character wandering around the city gives it even less of a forward drive than usual. Mike Carey's language is precise, and Jim Fern's art is beautiful, but if there was one issue of this book to skip it would be this one. Don't worry: you'll still be as lost next month.
