Watch Men!

POSTED BY Justin Tyler, 18 July 2008

By now you've probably heard or had a look at the Watchmen Trailer that's been much ballyhoed in the last 24 hours and I'll tell you, I watched it and it didn't really grab me. Maybe the anticipation is so great, and I did just see Dark Knight but... I'm worried. What did you guys think?

Here's an article from Entertainment Weekly about the movie!

I wasn't incredibly excited about this movie until I saw this trailer-- I couldn't bring myself to hope that they'd get the tone right. After seeing this, though, it looks like at least the trailer has gotten it right. The music, the characters, and the imagery are all pretty dead on. So I guess this trailer has me totally energized for the movie.

I'm not expecting much from this movie. I loved Dawn Of The Dead but thought 300 was overrated, too long, and repetitious. I thought the pics shown of the Golden Age characters from Watchmen looked cool, but the stuff taking place in "1985" looks like something out of Schumacher's Batman movies. I'm also not sure how I feel about some the casting. Maybe I'll be pleasently surprised like I was with The Incredible Hulk, but I'm not going to get too excited about this movie. I'm starting to think Zack Snyder might me another Michael Bay; 1 or 2 good movies in him and the rest are overblown crud.

the smashing pumpkins song was perfect except for the fact that billy corgan sang...it cheapen the feel of the trailer for me..plus the super slick look of the movie in contrast of the old paper of an 80's comic seems like quite the contrast...

I dont know what you mean by "I'm worried" I thought it looked great.

Yhe only thing I'm disappointed by is the shitty apple.com site. Their trailer player sux ballz.

I'm worried too Justin... I don't remember Silk Specter being that bad ass or Nite-Owl acting like Batman. The whole thing looks less like the greatest comic movie ever and more like the lowest common denominator of all comic movies.

i like the imagery n' all (espescially Doctor Manhattan), but for a movie that's got a lot of source material to cover they sure are employing the slo-mo a bit much.

What i love about the trailer is that ANYONE who doesnt have any knowledge of the comic book is completely left cold with that trailer. I mean it tells you nothing and is only REALLY interesting to those who know what all this jumbled mess of images mean. I like the trailer (a lot!) but only cause I was so giddy to see any and every footage from it. The jury is still out on the finished product but what images i have seen is very very interesting.

I'm mostly NOT excited for Watchmen because I think it would be better played out as an HBO single season series than a movie. The trailer was kind of cool, but some things looked too bright and shiny, unlike the mood I'd expect. Let's hope that this movie is closer to Donnie Darko than Batman and Robin.

Oh, God! Make the hurting stop!

If you think WATCHMEN can be translated to the big screen you don't really get it and should be the last person to translate WATCHMEN to the big screen. It's just incorrect. There's no way this movie can have the depth and substance of the source material, even if it does an admirable job of aping the comic book aesthetically.

Maybe that's narrow-mindedness on my part, but look at the evidence we've gotten so far. Snyder is known for putting visuals first (Did 300 have a plot?), all the hype is centered around how this will be the king of all blockbuster superhero movies (anyone familiar with WATCHMEN knows it's actually a deconstruction of just that) and... am I imagining things or is that the same Smashing Pumpkins song from BATMAN & ROBIN? Not a good omen.

I shouldn't naysay so early but that this movie exists probably means it sucks and the attitude Synder & Co. have towards it indicates they don't know what they're getting into beyond making yet another one-off popcorn flick.

The trailer is just... standard. It looks like every other movie in this genre. At best, this movie will probably be forgotten quickly.

The only worry will be how the audience receives a high brow comic. I really think they will have a hard time understanding the importance and inspiration of this book.

The preview was shown before Dark Knight and the audience I was sitting with was confused and silent.

It's very dark and I don't know if audiences are ready for that because it doesn't really have a happy ending. Not to mention, how will they respond to a few thousand NYers biting the farm for the greater good?

I totally geeked out over the trailer and the influx of pics.

The only downside is it got me all psyched for a flick that isn't out for another 8 months. That and i feel the overwhelming urge to read the entire of Watchmen again, which will take awhile, but a good while.

Worried? The trailer made me think "Holy crap, its the comic!" I was only worried about what the Dr would look like, and he looked great.
