Late Night Reading With Frank Miller

There's been a lot of talk about the new Spirit Movie based on the works of Will Eisner. As you all know this is Frank Miller's second outing as a director (Sin City being the first co-directed with Robert Rodriguez), and first as solo flight as director. Because of the black and white teaser trailer shown around New York Comic Con fans and critics have wondered if The Spirit should be called "Sin City 2". Recently Miller laid all fears to rest saying that The Spirit is a full-color movie.
One controversial move though has been the change of color for the Spirit character. In the movie his trademark outfit will be black instead of the classic blue from Eisner's stories.
Miller had this to say about the change in his 9th installment to the production blog:
"Going to black brings back his essential mystery, his Zorro-like sexiness. It also makes that red tie of his look very, very cool. So I made the call, with all respect to Eisner’s creation, and most importantly, to what I perceived as his underlying intention. It was an easy call for me to make. The Spirit dresses in black, and looks much the better for it."
What do you think about Frank Miller taking his first solo turn in the director's chair? If you're a fan of the source material let us know how you feel about the subtle alterations to the character of the Spirit.
In the meantime, Miller has been nice enough to keep a regular production blog for The Spirit. I always love it when creators take the time to blog. Here's a link to Frank's Spirit Blog, just in case you're like me and can't sleep.
I think Jerry Seinfeld said it best when he joked that the fingers are the last part of the human body to fall asleep.
Enjoy!

Its funny how,now that Miller has creative control over things, now its HIM deciding some poor schlubb of a writer didnt understand his creation properly for the film business...Want to bet Miller cursed Robocop's directors and producers to all types of hell for creative changes THEY decided to make? Afterall Miller did go to Hollywood to work in the film industry, and after just two films left and swore never to return. Rodriguez had to actually shoot part of Sin City, and show it to Miller before he agreed to let that film be made. And besides, Eisner only did The Spirit for 50 years, so what does he know...God, Miller's a jackass.
I'm going to...agree with Bombardem? (Wait, really?)
Yeah, it's pretty damn offensive to see a fellow comics creator substitute his own sensibilities in place of those of a character's original creator.
If it was anyone besides Frank Miller, I'd be shocked. If it was Frank Miller ten years ago, I'd be shocked. The Goddamn Frank Miller, however, is predictably horrible.
yeah thats bent. its like giving the batsuit nipples.
lets just shit over the source material eh frank? this film i sprobably gonna blow balls.
the quote that really bothers me is.
"So I made the call, with all respect to Eisner’s creation, and most importantly, to what I perceived as his underlying intention. It was an easy call for me to make. The Spirit dresses in black, and looks much the better for it."
Yeah, I'll give my respect to Eisner, but my opinion is way more important. And you know what, Its already way better. Black, I'M A GENIUS. Pft Blue, what did Eisner know. I'm so Goddamned awesome.
Also Zorro like sexiness can we all please agree that Frank Miller needs to come out of the closet. We are ok with it Frank, just give up the charade.
This is some great feedback. I had no idea we had such a loyal Will Eisner Fan Base. Even though the movie is probably finished, be sure to let us know what you'd wish was in the movie (and we can cross our fingers and hope).
Well its a digital film, I'm sure they could have made the suit Josephs Technicolor Dreamcoat if they wanted in post production. Nothing in film is really the color you end up seeing, they digitally recolor everything now. Textures are more important.
Yeah that quote by Miller was the real kicker. It was like saying "With all due respect, you're an idiot."
I wouldnt say I'm an Eisner fan. I'm sure had no one mentioned the suit color I'd have never even known. I do however hate when a creator's work is re-worked like this. Just look at all the films made of Stephen Kings novels before he was rich enough to insure he had creative control, and then the films were incredible.
I think you are all wrong - did you even read Miller's post? By making the suit black he actually IS going back to the original since blue was used in place of black when printed on newspaper. Blue or black suit - Miller's going to make this good.
that is here-say on Miller's part Riley. Its possible that Will wanted a Black suit, but Miller is just assuming that he did, hes got no proof. You think if it actually mattered to Will (and if they were good friends) that he would have mentioned how he always wanted the suit to be black, but he never did.
Guys, you've got it all wrong- clearly Miller is making a film about the PSP game Exit!
