Speed Racer Zooms to theaters at Mach 5

POSTED BY Charlie Schneider, 05 May 2008

Don't throw away your ticket stubs yet, Iron Man was only the beginning in a long line of summer blockbusters.  Next up this week is Speed Racer the next big release from the Wachowski Brothers.  This film has been working toward the big screen since 1992, and it's finally made it here.  Early trailers show a highly stylized view of the Racer Universe, and speculation about the quality of the film is optimistic

Here's a bit of comic cross-over trivia for you.  Superman Director and now Action Comics writer Richard Donner is married to Laura Shuler Donner who was heavily involved in one of the many attempts to bring Speed Racer to the big screen.  Also attached to her iteration of the movie was comedian Vince Vaughn, who would have played the mysterious Racer-X.

I'm just hoping that chimp doesn't turn out be Jar-Jar Binks in disguise.  I bet he's still having trouble finding work in Hollywood.

I only look forward to this (on dvd) because the Wachowski Brothers design the coolest chase scenes in the industry, and know how CGI works, or doesnt. I predict the racing will be incredibly cool, and the rest of the film will suck harder than a Matrix sequel..

My father is a huge Speed Racer fan! I cant tell you how much he loves it, he's seen it since he was 5 (now he's 42!). But when he saw a trailer for this he told me it looked like shit lol

I'm not surprised, Wachowski brothers have not done a good movie since the first Matrix. I'll probably pick it up as well on DVD, so me and my dad can watch it. But for me it's just too colorful and the acting seems blah for this. Seriously about the color though, I think I'll get a stroke from watching this!....it's not even an anime and I can still get a stroke from this lol

I just saw a terrible review of this film from the New Yorker. But its the New Yorker and they hate everything.

They do, they hated Iron Man too, and sadly were one of the first published reviews. I have no respect for the high brow reviewers because they have no idea what makes a film enjoyable. They are more concerned with weird minutiae. I actually hope this film does suck, so Iron Man continues to rock the box office. But I tell ya what, the Wachowski brothers didnt even go to the premier, so what does that tell you?

You remember the Family Guy joke about the people that work at the New Yorker and not need toilets. Such a great and dirty joke.

Well, even Newsarama is giving this a mixed review, pretty much how I called it. They say the screenplay is horrible, the plots all convoluted and confused and needlessly complex for a childrens film, and yes this is a childrens film. On top of that, its 135 minutes long...which just boggles my mind. Why is it the studios force all these great films to fit into a 90 minute window butchering the shit out of them, and then this goes 135?

On the positive side, they say the races scenes are a feast for the eyes, and if you blink youll miss something. Personally I think they look goofy, and phony. The race cars seem to jump from very real, to bad animation, not even CGI, just cartoony. Then there's the silly racetracks, and goofy pinball lighting. The Mach 5 looks cool as hell though, particularly the scene with them in the rain with the top up.

I'd definitely rent this on dvd, but I'd just go see Iron Man again rather than see this in a theater. Maybe it will score higher with the manga/anime fans.

I don't think anyone was going for the dynamic script. So the fact that its horrid doesn't surprise me all that much.

Wouldn't it be funny if Roger Ebert was asked for his review of a movie and said: "I didn't bother, I just bought another ticket for that last movie I saw."

Did you hear that bomb go off?

Yeah, that was Speed Racer at the box office...

the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard
