The Letters Page
As we've mentioned before, there's way too much mail for us to answer in the shows, so we'll be answering some of it right here on the blog. As always, thanks for sending in your questions, and please keep shooting them over to tips@pulpsecret.com, call them in to 888-841-7549, or post a video response on YouTube!
Okay, so there's a lot of letters I haven't gotten to, mainly because they involve books I've never read. However, I don't want to ignore 'em, so we're going to start getting through as many as we can, and I'd love to hear what YOU guys think about these series and books. In the meantime, they're on my list, and once I get a chance to check them out, I'll let you all know what I think.
Justin from Chicago:
After several years of disenchantment, I had my love for comics revived by Claudio Sanchez's [of Coheed and Cambria fame] Armory War comic series. I wondered what more seasoned comic fans [such as yourselves] thought of the series / the music-art crossover, and/or other crossovers like the Joss Whedon's Serenity comic series.I will say that I liked (but didn't love) the Serenity comic... It was meant to bridge the TV series and movie, and it kind of felt like that; an in between story. I am, though, looking forward to the new series that's coming out. The Buffy and Angel comics continuations have been great... Let's see if Whedon can go for the hat trick.
Luis from Costa Rica:
Hello from Costa Rica, I'm a fan of your job, I think you're really funny, and the comments are right on Q, but it is tough to be thorough in a 12 min show. Since I'm down here in the tropics is quite difficult to buy buy comics, since they never get here, but I have access to the limited comics MARVEL publish in their official site, and I became fond of Cable and Deadpool series. Is it possible that you guys make a review of this great and fun character (Deadpool) on your show? I would really appreaciate it.Actually, we're having the entire team from Cable/Deadpool on our live show (pliggity plug) on February 26th, and will have the audio podcast up soon after that!
Nathan is St. Louis:
love your show i subscribe to it through itunes. its great just to hear guys with different tastes in comic discussing what they love, COMICS. Here is my request please please please review these upcoming titles: Atomic Robo, Unbeatable, TPB. I would love to here what you guys think about these, because as it stands I'm really interested in them.We did end up reviewing Unbeatable on the show... The art is awesome, and though we weren't crazy about the story, we did think there were some cool ideas. I think it's well worth picking up, if only to support the publisher and get him to do another book of similar quality.
Dave from Birmingham, UK:
Just started watching the show, very funny. What do you think of 2000AD, is it even on your radar in the US? On top of Judge Dredd it has an everchanging set of stories. Recently I've really liked Defoe, Caballistics and Sinister Dexter. My all time favorites in 2000ad would be Nemesis the warlock and maybe Strontium dog or Halo Jones back in the day. Plus Nemesis was brilliant and... I should stop now. Secondly, are you looking forward to the Watchmen movie? I think they will mess it up it so badly it will set comics back fifty years on both sides of the atlantic, but there is a small chance it could change everything, in a good way.I am actually pretty psyched for the Watchmen movie... And mainly because of Zach Snyder. He's definitely one of the most visually original working directors today, and one of the only "music video/game" style directors who also manages to make movies, rather than a series of set pieces. "Dawn of the Dead" was superb, and has some of the most brilliant shots I've ever seen on film. "300" wasn't my favorite thing ever, but it held together fantastically, and was probably the most faithful comic book to film translation made. I have a lot of confidence that he's going to make "Watchmen" something very special.
Karan from NZ:
My name is Karan, i'm down here in NZ doing Dentistry. Unfortunately a certain someone at our flat uses up our monthly internet allowance in the span of like a day, so I walk up to University (which has a free 2kB/s connection) and leave my laptop there to download your shows. I'm a big fan of comics, but down here they're so expensive I can't justify buying anything! As it is i'm a student and would rather buy food with my money ;-) I was wondering if you could do a show on some of the coolest free online comics, just so I can while away the time when i'm supposed to be studying? Cheers!I've mentioned 'em a bunch on the blog, but instead of re-hashing stuff you can search with Google ("pulp secret" and "online comics"), I'll give you my new favorite: Laugh Out Loud Cats. Drawn in the style of an old-timey cartoon, mixed with LOL Cats speak, Laugh Out Loud Cats is the better than... Well, you know. I'll leave you with a few, and check out the website for over 700 free cartoons!
