X-Origins Direct to DVD

POSTED BY Alex Zalben, 28 November 2007

Okay, nobody freak out yet... X-Men Origins: Wolverine is still heading to your movie theaters, as is (probably) Magneto.

However, rumors have flooded the net in the past 24 hours that there will be several other X-Men Origins movies, focusing on other characters, and they'll head direct to DVD.

Personally, I'm a little mixed on this news; Direct to DVD doesn't have the same hate-stamp it used to, but neither is it a stunning endorsement of the material. Additionally, I'm coming around to the idea that the X-Men Origins series is a good way of continuing the franchise, but it still feels like Fox is shooting a gift horse in the mouth.

It's well known that the Fox brass HATE the X-Men series, which is totally inexplicable. X-Men Films: "Hey guys, here's a really nice gift. Now here's two more gifts. What do you think?" Fox: "Go f**k yourself."

Attaching the Direct to DVD label to the series just seems like another attempt to kill the franchise, rather than a nice gift for fans.

That being said, at the same time as these X-Men Origins DVD films leaked, Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin' Aces) posted a picture of Juggernaut on his blog, with no explanation, fueling rumors that he would direct Vinnie Jones in X-Men Origins: Juggernaut. Hopefully, if that happens, they'll let the internet write ALL of Juggie's dialogue, because boy, those lines were a delight in X3.

If I'm coming across as a little down on this whole thing, it's because I am. That being said, who do you guys want to see X-Men Origins films for, if they do happen? And would you pick them up on DVD?

Juggernaut was one of the only shining lights of the otherwise dim X3.

I would buy the DVD's if they do come out. Normally I wouldnt go for straight to DVD films, but I have confidence in these films. Some of these writers/directors are using their time to make films on characters most comic films would only show for a brief couple of mintues. Now will the Juggernaut film be any good? Probably not. But I just like it that they are taking the effort to flesh out some of these characters and it would be even better if they did it to the whole Marvel/DC universe; and not just the standard major characters and teammates.

I'm still bummed Gambit never showed up, (and that they ruined Rogue, but that's another story) so I guess I'd like to see him one way or another. Id probably buy the DVD's.

Well are they the direct to dvd animated films, like dr strange, and death of superman? Or is this some live action cheaptastic nonsense? Because the animated films are always D2DVD, and marketed that way.

I will of course check the movies out but i cant help but think that direct to dvd is a complete cop out. Then again, i cant imagine a Jug movie would be remotely interesting. id rather see the movie invested in another x men movie. how bout x-men 4 w/ Gambit, Apocolypse, Cable and Bishop.

Oh I'm sure if properly written just about any X character can make for an interesting film. Sure there are more central characters who should have a film first, but maybe thats the reason they are going this direction. because Fox has ideas about making theatrical releases of the core members, or is at least leaving that option open. This is all just rumors at this point anyway, all based on one guys suppositions on his blog.

Let's be real, a Juggernaut movie would work perfectly fine as a D2D movie, probably better than it would in theaters. I think a Juggs picture should basically be a dumb, fun exploitation action flick, with a little bit of a magical element thrown in the story, and that would work better as a direct DVD release than theatrical. Look at something like The Condemned. If that were a D2D movie, people would be really impressed, because it would've been a really competent and well-done D2D. But it was a really lousy theatrical release. I could see a similar dynamic with a Juggernaut movie, and I hope they don't drop the ball.
