Movie News Updates

POSTED BY Alex Zalben, 29 October 2007

If it's Halloween, it must be Saw. If it's Monday, it must mean massive movie updates, a.k.a. "Things that will never happen:"

    • ITEM! Halle Berry wants to be Catwoman again! ITEM! Nobody else wants another Catwoman movie!
    • David "Wedding Crashers, Fred Claus" Dobkin is taking over the reigns on the Flash movie from Shawn "I suck" Levy. By the way, this Flash movie will spin-off of JLA, and follow *spoiler* Wally West. (Via Cinematical)
    • Greg Berlanti, creator of Everwood, and Jack & Bobby, will take over directing Green Lantern, which will also spin out of JLA; except that John Stewart is in JLA, and Hal Jordan is supposed to be in the Green Lantern movie. (Via CHUD)
    • Aussie Teresa Palmer is probably cast as Wonder Woman in JLA. Check out the picture to the right, and start writing your Wonder Woman/Harry Potter slash fiction. (Via Aint-it-Cool)
A couple of reactions to these items...

Re: The Catwoman thing, it's never going to happen. If you read the story, it's the sort of idle chatter that film stars like to engage in "If we did another movie, it would be better," doesn't mean, "We will be doing a better movie." The first movie was so atrocious, and such a bomb, that it will never happen. Plus, Halle Berry is not quite the "Star of Tomorrow" she was when headlining the Catwoman movie.

In regards to David Dobkin taking over for Sean Levy, that's a case of the pot taking over for the kettle, honestly. They're both generic comedy directors, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The Flash has always been a positive hero. He's not Spider-Man, and things will often get very, very bad for him. But in general, while The Flash shouldn't be slapstick madness, it should be fun and light. As long as the script is fun, and takes the threats seriously, we should be fine.

Greg Berlanti is a surprising, but actually pretty good choice for the Green Lantern movie, in particular if it turns out to be Hal Jordan. Berlanti, in both Jack & Bobby, and Everwood, created an idealized, Norman Rockwell-esque America that would perfectly fit the Golden Age fly-boy sensibility that surrounds Hal Jordan. That being said? I'd maybe rather see a John Stewart Green Lantern.

In any case, none of these things will ever happen. In order for The Flash and Green Lantern to go through, JLA would have to be a massive hit. Even if it's a massive hit, can you imagine The WB spending enough money to make the Green Lantern and The Flash movies look any good? More like the Green Lantrine, and The Flush, am I right?

    I am.
