Spidey Jazz Hands!

Fanboys better be webslingin' their way to the Great White Way as soon as next year because your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is swingin' onto the Broadway stage! That's right kids, Peter Parker: Photo-Journalist, teacher, and now Broadway star? The Spider-Man musical has been in the works for awhile now with Julie Taymor set to direct with Bono of U2 doing the music.

Taymor, who just gave Beatles songs a new life in her recently released movie "Across the Universe," already has had great Broadway success by bringing "The Lion King" to the stage. Many fanboys are skeptical of the musical, especially since the infamous Superman musical from the 70's was a bomb, and the long rumored Batman musical never made it to the stage. If there's one thing we should know by now it is to trust Julie Taymor. She took an animated movie that seemed like it would never be able to be brought to life onstage int oa full blown Broadway phenomenon, becoming one of the highest grossing musicals of all time and winning the Tony for Best Musical of the year.

This past summer there was a reading of the Spider-Man musical, and it seems like it went well because Taymor and company are now looking for a space big enough to house everyone's favorite webslinger. The Spider-Man team would like to open in New York as early as next year but as Taymor puts it "there aren't enough Broadway houses big enough" to hold the grand scale rock musical. I'm sure they'll find a space, and after "Lion King" and "Across the Universe" I have full faith in Julie Taymor bringing beloved characters to the stage and keeping the characters intact.
