Comic Book Club Preview: Heather Fink
August 14th brings us another edition of Comic Book Club, the live talk show where you can meet me, Justin, and Pete in person, and hang out with our comic book friends! Hooray! Before the show, I'm going to post up little chats I had with all of the guests. Yesterday, that was with Jesse Falcon, VP of Product Development at Marvel. Today, I'm talking with Heather Fink, NYC commedienne extraordinaire. - Alex
PS: So tell me a little about yourself... You host a million variety shows, right?
HF: Yes! One million. Currently, my baby is Street Meat at Cake Shop... Other shows in the past have included Sexytime at Mo's, Hoboken Comedy Night, and a couple odd one-off shows at Mo Piktins including Analog Dreamz.
PS: I know you're a big BKV fan. If you had to pick ONE of his series, which one, and why?
HF: Well, based on the first couple Ex Machinas, I would've said Ex Machina; it's sharp, relevant, and it has a way of talking about modern politics in a very resonant, direct, and meaningful way. But the last volume kinda sucked and was boring, and I'm getting impatient waiting for a new one. So I'm saying Y the Last Man. I didn't like Runaways BTW. But Y is really well developed, with some of the most dynamic characters I've seen. Plus he's taking a serious, well thought out look into a world run by women and it's just damn fascinating.
PS: Prove your comic geek cred: First comic book?
HF: Well, I first loved comic characters on the small screen before I loved them in books. My first comic book that got me into reading them regularly was a free copy of Ex Machina given to me by my boyfriend at the time. After that, my next one was Preacher, so I got into the good stuff right away. When I was younger I do remember enjoying Matt Groening's Life in Hell series, and Archie. But when I was a kid I was so into Batman: The Animated Series, and the other ones near that timeslot, like Spider-Man, Superman, and X-men, that I created my own series of drawings of a character that I sent into Fox. Her name was Peacock Woman. And there were some other characters, like Tiger Lady, who had a tiger that turned into a car. Also, my favorite movies since I was a kid were the Terminator movies, and Predator. I have a thing for this sort of stuff.
PS: Favorite series/graphic novel/single issue of all time?
HF: PREACHER!
PS: The most annoying character in comics is...
HF: Mary Jane Parker. UGH. F the good girl. I like Felicia better. She's the foxy sly one on the side. I hate the girl next door!
PS: The most awesome character in comics is...
JF: Batman. Batman! Batman hands down. He sticks it to the man. He started badass-alt-cool thanks to Frank Miller. But from then on that character has sparked a million amazing thoughts in the minds of comic writers. He's like the ultimate muse. He kicks Superman's ass when he's playing too much by the rules, which is rightfully lame. What kind of human can kick the ass of a superhuman? Batman.
