SDCC Comic Book Club Preview: Kevin Chesley
Over the next few days, I'll be giving you a little preview of our Comic Book Club show at Comic-Con, by chatting with our special guests. Today, I'm talking to Kevin Chesley, one sixth of LA's sketch comedy powerhouse, TROOP! Kevin will be making a very... special... appearance as part of our panel. You'll just have to show up to find out what it is! - Alex PS: So, how's it going, Kevin? You feelin' good?
KC: I've been walking around a lot lately saying "Psyched to the Core." That is how I feel. Psyched to the Core. About the Con. About finally getting to wear my costume in public. About Comic Book Club. Put this on my gravestone: "This guy used to walk around talking to himself."
PS: Give us a little background on yourself.
KC: Son of a Naval Sea Captain, I am an actor, writer, and Saturn driver from Los Angeles. I'm a member of the sketch comedy band TROOP! and I am psyched to the core.
PS: Okay, enough chit-chat. Prove your comic nerd worthiness... First comic?
KC: Wow...I've never thought about that before. I think the credit would have to go to:
Batman vs. the Incredible Hulk (DC Special Series #27, 1981). The Joker is recruited to help the Shaper of Worlds who is going mad and will twist all of reality if he isn't healed. Having used the Hulk's gamma energy to calm the Shaper's mind, the Joker winds up with near-cosmic level powers as the Shaper makes the Joker's wishes come true. Despite his new power, the Joker ultimately defeats himself, when twisting reality ever tighter in an effort to defeat Hulk and Batman, he drives himself over the edge, having created too many worlds in too little time.I think that, at last count, I read this AWESOME comic book over 46,000 times. It was one of those BIG comics too - like the size of one of those giant novelty greeting cards? A believe that in this story they manage to cram every single Batman and Hulk villain ever. Len Wein kicks that "too many villains" philosophy right to the curb.
PS: Favorite superpower?
KC: I am a total Wolverine dork (wait a second, is Len Wein secretly my father?) but I always wanted to be able to stop time like Evie in "Out of this World." Oh, and Hiro in "Heroes"...is that reference a tad more "with it?" I would use it to stop crime and then reward myself by getting into movies for free.
PS: Favorite comic/graphic novel/series?
KC: X-Men. Sorry, I'm that kid. But also...From Hell, Season of Mists, the G.I. Joe Snake Island Civil War, New Mutants, Alien Legion, and anything where every hero and villain in the universe fight each other or by each other's side...especially Cosmic Odyssey and The Infinity Gauntlet.
PS: What are you looking forward to at the Con (besides, of course, Comic Book Club)?
KC: The Watchmen thing and the Neil Gaiman thing...what a shame I can't make it Friday, huh? Sigh.
PS: Anything else you want to plug?
KC: I blog once every two months over on Myspace. And you can check out TROOP!'s website to watch our videos, look at stupid pictures, and find out when we'll be in your area. I also want to plug the phrase "Psyched to the Core."
Check out Kevin Chesley, and much more, at the Comic Book Club panel at San Diego Comic-Con: Saturday, July 28th @ 7:30pm, Room 5AB!
