Darkness Calls was a really good book. Mainly because it deals with the history of Hellboy in a soft way. Clearly Mignola is planning a huge event to happen in his series, so this was most likely a prologue to it. But it had great art and a lot of great action in it as well.

Crooked Man is what you want in a Hellboy book. Creeps, fantastic art (Corben is turning into my favorite writer), and lots of humor. This is what makes Hellboy great; that you dont need to read all the books in order to understand anything. First you read a book in 1958, then another story taking place in 2001. But Mignola does it in a way where you dont have to look up history in order to get the books.

To be honest, I'm alittle behind on the B.P.R.D. stuff; but what I've read as been soild and I expect this to be good too. As for the movie, well I loved the first one and it got me into this world Mignola created. I have confidence that this movie will be better then the first and it's going to be just as good as Iron Man and Hulk. Plus after seeing teasers, Johann Krauss looks fucking amazing and a great new addition for the movie, just loved him in the books.

I'd better be seeing an Avengers Iniative 14 or Astounding Wolfman 7 review Friday. Or I will eat a kitten. Do you guys really want kitten blood on your hands?

Pete better be back next episode!

    • Charlie Schneider (guest) wrote on July 9, 2:34 pm

Not to worry, Pete was back this week for Comic Book Club w/ Greg Pak. He's back in action.

his disappearance hints of Skrull......whos comic review do you trust?......

I hadn't thought of that. That explains some of Pete's reviews. Think Marvel will do a tie-in based on Pete? Why not? It'll just add to looooooong list of tie-in's for this event.

I love BPRD, its quite possibly my favorite comic published, its just got such a great universe and so many awesome characters. I loved when Johan got a body, and I particularly enjoy the Wendigo creature that has appeared lately.

And I also do no like Family Guy Alex, but its good to hear that Johan is great in the movie, I was hoping as such.

The latest Hellboy book was fantastic. I felt the previous one or two dragged a little bit, but if off-loading art duties loosens up Mignola's writing, I am (sadly) all for it. The artist on this volume was great. Mignola said he has the same style, but instead of vague shapes suggesting things, he draws every detail. I agree and it is a great pleasure to look at.

I've been loving BPRD since it spun off, but the frog stuff has been growing old to me. I liked this volume as it dealt with more varied threats, was very fast paced, and had a great horror element.

I'm picking up the trades, so I'm always a couple months behind, but I look forward to new ones whenever they are released. Mignola is hitting a stride right now and it's an amazing ride.

I wish Pete was here to review Hellboy stuff. You just know he's ga-ga for the stuff.

Aside: Can we get a bigger comment box? I want to be able to read what I have typed!

Well, this was a better show than when you guys talked about Wanted and hadn't seen it yet. Can't say I'm a big Hellboy fan, but I'll check it out when it comes out on disc.

Pete is as dead as Cap is. Can't wait to see how he comes back.

Hey Bombardem, I checked out iFanboy.... Nice opening animation... It's kind of like The Stack, but longer and much less funny... and they didn't see the movie. They seem like nice guys, but I just don't need that kind of "in depth" discussion. Thanks for the link though... interesting..

    • D. Peace (guest) wrote on July 9, 9:20 pm

Why are there constantly sirens blaring in the background during your show? Is The Stack shot in a crackhouse?

Who should play Captain America? I got four words, my friends: Gary. Busey. Is. Available.

Bombardem, ifanboy posted their hellboy video podcast on july 9th, the same day as Pulp Secret, look if you do not believe me. The problem with ifanboy is that when they are reviewing something that I am not all that interested in, they are not entertaining, while Justin Pete and Alex could review a cat taking a dump and I'd be entertained. The one thing ifanboy has on pulp secret is you know when they are going to post their podcasts, while the posting of the COMIC BOOK CLUB podcasts is very erratic. Alex, did the file corrupt for a 2nd consecutive week? I hope not!

Welcome to the Stack, with your hosts Alex, Justin and (wait for it)... "Feet". Pete has been officially replaced by "Feet". "Feet" like Pete, cannot be seen on camera. Pete does not have the key to "stairs" and has been unable to come back up the stairs. "Feet" is just that..Feet (two actually). Since "Feet" does not have mouth, who cares what "Feet" wants to say.

I'm a big Hellboy fan, loved the movie, but I also am a Luke Goss fan and he was great villain in Hellboy 2. Need to be commended on his performance.

Hellboy Spectacular: Exclusive Hellboy 2 Review, Darkness Calls, The Crooked Man, and Killing Ground

In honor of the new Hellboy 2 movie we have a Hellboy Spectacular edition of The Stack.  First up is a look at Hellboy Vol. 8: Darkness Calls.  Justin really likes how this book fits into Mike Mignola's Hellboy series.  Next up we check out Hellboy: The Crooked Man.  Both Alex and Justin are in agreement on this great book.  Then we look at BPRD Vol. 8: Killing Ground.  Alex thinks this book is great for those looking to get into the Hellboy mythos.

Finishing up, we give you an exclusive look at the new Hellboy 2 movie.  The guys talk about how visually stunning Hellboy 2 was for them.  They love the practical creature work and think that it's a breath of fresh air from all the CGI shortcuts superhero movies have taken lately.  Listen to why we think you can't miss this awesome new movie.

See you at the movies this weekend!

Be sure to watch The Stack three times a week, and send you comments and questions to tips@pulpsecret.com!
