I really wish Bendis would come back to doing Runaways. Tear

    • Uthor wrote on June 23, 2:01 pm

      Bendis never wrote Runaways...

Not picking up SI: Runaways/Young Avengers as I don't really care about SI or Young Avengers and I am "waiting for the trade" on Runaways.

Wolverine this week was clearly the best comic of the week. Knowning I'm not a huge Wolvie fan, it comes as a shock...but I love this future storyline and I hope it stays this good consistantly with the writing. Cause it seems no matter who writes this title, every issue seems to get worse as they write it.

But yeah let's talk about that comic for 20 seconds and go in depth with the marvelous Secret Invasion Runaways...yeah...that was really a 'super' issue...*rolls eyes* You guys seriously need to look better on what comics to talk about on the top of the show.

    • Bombardem wrote on June 23, 3:07 pm

I agree, Wolverine 66 was clearly the mostimportant, and hands down best thing to come out last week. I was totally against this story when I heard it was coming, *yawn* another out of current continuity Wolverine tale...and then I read it OMG! I was totally blown away! Awesome story, awesome art, incredible vision of a future USA, amazing new characters. I loved it all. Come to the forums here and talk about this issue!

I would have to say I hate Bishop the most. No need for him. And heres my reason why. He's from a crappy future, and comes back to make our present crappier. I mean whenever he goes back he has no clue about what is happening or why they happen besides general stuff. At least do some research before you go back and give some valuable information. Plus whenever he goes back, its guns ablazin. Seriously? Everytime? I wish someone would just trap him in a time rift and block out our knowledge of his existance.

PS: Is it me or is it that everytime they involve some sort of time travel arc its never panned out or the storyline is just horrible. One exception would be Age of Apocalypse, but most of them generally blow.

    • wwprice wrote on June 23, 2:38 pm

Alex, I really recommend you read all of Joss' six issues in one sitting. I was underwhelmed by the finale when i read it by myself, but then I read all of the six issue issues together and it's a really cool storyline. The book was definitely hurt by the delays.

Terry Moore is a great choice to run the book, but we'll have to see on Humberto Ramos' art.

    • Bombardem wrote on June 23, 3:22 pm

Every week I am more disappointed over what issues you guys choose to review. It's bad enough Alex does his 'show a day' videos about crap no one cares about, can we keep the show in the mainstream, and away from the kiddie books? Teen Titans, Young Avengers, Runaways, all that teeny crap, who cares? Meanwhile you just gloss over the important releases in the speed round, or ignore them completely.

Characters I hate. At DC it has to be Nightwing. At Marvel it has to be Hank Pym.

I'll wait to read RASL in the collected edition when its done in 20 years...let me know when its done.

    • Andy (guest) wrote on June 23, 6:39 pm

Runaways (dropped Whedon's run, didn't think he had a firm grasp on the characters, but BKV's stuff is fantastic) was one of the best comic books from the past 20 years. Young Avengers was surprisingly good, and early Teen Titans Johns Teen Titans was fantastic, even really liked the early OYL stuff. Just because these comic books are about teens doesn't mean they are "kiddie." They have all been well written, well drawn, and well received. The fact that you are so dismissive of them is quite simply ignorant. Also, Spider-man started out as a teenager. You gonna tell me that was a mistake.

AND lots of people have complained when they do a Wolverine book (or that X-force one shot from last week for instance), He gets too much coverage, I HATE Wolverine, etc etc etc. Now you want it IN the main show?

If you don't like what they are doing, Bombardem don't watch it. There is no need to complain and complain and complain and complain because it isn't how YOU like it. If you could do a better show, than do it. Make your own video review show, but don't keep slamming these guys. You aren't offering any insight. You just complain. A lot of us actually really like what they have done.

    • Bombardem wrote on June 23, 8:04 pm

If you dont like my comments, dont read them.

Sorry, but books about teen characters are for children, and pedophiles. Which are you?

    • Andy (guest) wrote on June 23, 8:44 pm

you are right I should take my own advice. Just sticking up for what I believe in.

Sweeping generalizations are such good statements too make. I liked runaways because I was a teen when the first series was published and it gave me relatable iconic teens in an impressively good story. You really should read it before you judge it as such and make such bold statements. Its like saying I cannot enjoy the character of storm because I am not a black woman. As long as the charcter is well written and well thought out it really doesn't matter. If you are limiting yourself based on these narrow minded conceptions you are going to miss a lot of great comic books. Kid Devil for instance from Teen Titans was perhaps the best new character of 2007. But you are just going to dismiss him because he is under 20? What's the point?

    • Gorgeousaur wrote on June 24, 12:10 am

Really, Bombardem? Pedophile? Does that make parents pedophiles for washing their kids too? How about teachers? I mean they spend all day hanging around children.
      Get a grip.

    • Bombardem wrote on June 24, 1:53 am

If they go to a store, and pay to wash children, then yes...As to teachers, well if the school system here in seattle is anything to judge by, then yes, yes they are.

      cool show

    • mrmister wrote on June 23, 8:11 pm

So glad Whedon's run is finished. Hopefully Terry Moore can save this book because right now it doesn't have a pulse. His story just wasn't that interesting, he introduced too many characters considering this was a six issue fill in arc, and of course it was always late. Yeah as you guys have said he always delivers at least one or two cute well written character moments, but that shouldn't give him a free pass.

Scalped was easily the book of the week, but Wolverine was cool also.

      Question for The Stack Crew

On the topic of people waiting for the trade do you three think more books should go the Criminal route and offer extras that don't appear in the collected editions?

    • jawshoowah (guest) wrote on June 23, 8:19 pm

I character I have hated from the very first time I saw him is without a doubt Gambit. He just annoys me so badly for some reason.

Also, what character's did you used to hate and then have your opinion 180 change because of a story line. I never was into Cyclops before I read Astonish Xmen and now Scott Summers is finaly interesting to me.

Also, I'd much rather hear a review up front that you guys are mixed on (like SI: YA/R) than one that the whole internet loves like wolverine 66 because on titles I'm debating on getting, with the economy as it is, i'd rather hear longer arguments about toss ups than the sure things.

    • jawshoowah (guest) wrote on June 23, 8:20 pm

Also....that first letter up there /\, that guy should be a 1

"Another round of cigarettes, please." WTFLOL! XD Couldn't contain the laughter.

I hate Iron Man, but that's cause of Civil War mostly. I hate Emma Frost, she's like a hooker with powers. I don't know what's the point of her, but I don't want her whole history to care about her.

    • Superfly wrote on June 23, 11:04 pm

Comic "hero" I hate the most? Boy, there are so many to choose from (especially over on the DC side of life)... I guess I'd have to say Lobo is probably the worst. I bought the Lobo trade back in the early 90's when he seemed to be the latest rage and everyone was talking about him. What complete and utter crap that was. Never have I been sorrier over a book I spent good hard-earned money on. I couldn't beleive how bad it was. I remember putting the book done and thinking "That's it? People really like this stuff? Is DC really serious or is this just some poor idea of a joke?" I still can't believe he's still around after all this time. I really thought more fans (and writers) would eventually come back to reality and wipe him away from continuity in one of DC's frequent history and continuity re-writing events. That fact that he's still around is a testament to the rising power of apathy and ignorance in this country. Yes, I REALLY hate him that much.

    • Uthor wrote on June 24, 1:40 am

Lobo was created as a joke as a response to the trend of ultra violent characters coming out in the 90's. He's satirical and shouldn't be taken as a serious character at all.

That said, I can only take him in small doses.

    • Gorgeousaur wrote on June 24, 12:08 am

I'd have to say Superman. Even as a kid I'd wonder why Superman never went back in time to solve every problem ever if he was able to time travel. And about a year ago I was reading about him fighting some super strong bad guy, but the guy had ONE weakness which was a certain frequency. So some person from halfway around the world told him this and Superman was able to hear it and was able to hear her while fighting the guy and match the pitch perfectly with just his voice. Lame. With someone as powerful as Superman why would the DC need any other hero?

    • Charlie Schneider (guest) wrote on June 24, 10:25 am

It's all about storytelling and intellectual property. DC owns a vast stable of superheros. They (and Marvel) rotate them in and out as popularity dictates. It's always a battle between the storytellers and the suits. Suits would say kill off all underperforming characters, but the storytellers say I have great ideas for "character X". It's the same old story, corporate America vs. The Artists.

What's everyone's opinion on corporate involvement in comic books?

    • jose (guest) wrote on June 24, 12:43 pm

alex didn't what he said about cable. cable is the best because fight with his hand and uses power to. unlike superman he can fight hand to hand.

    • Steven J. Vasquez (guest) wrote on June 24, 3:29 pm

In response to Charlie Schneider's question of corporate involvement in comic books:

In my opinion, the cases can vary. Sometimes the corporation will get involved with certain properties to initiate some kind of attempt at change. Other times, they'll get involved when said properties are going to be featured in big screen flicks, as well as various other reasons too numerous to count here. Sometimes corporated initiated involvement could work with carefull planning, but on the whole can ruin an already in progress creative venture (thinking of when Mark Waid and Ron Garney were doing their great run on Captain America and yanked off for Jeph Loeb and Rob Liefeld's run, after which, Waid and Garney returned).

If the involvement of the corporation can be pulled off, great. But, it seems (to me) more of a hinderance than a blessing more often than not.

    • Bombardem wrote on June 24, 4:30 pm

The best arguement for the artisits, or as you said underperforming superhero titles, are things like Blade. Here we had a nearly unknown to the general populace character that spawned a trilogy of films, AND a tv series. Hellboy was/is unknown to even most comic fans and getting its second film which will be even bigger than the first. Even Spawn did well as a film and had an HBO series.

    • bandito (guest) wrote on June 24, 9:47 pm

      spawn movie sucked
      bad

    • Bombardem wrote on June 24, 11:08 pm

Your nuts. It was a low budget film, that actually made a nice profit. 21 mill on opening, and that was 10 years ago. It may not have been the best story, thx todd, but it followed the comic for the most part. But what I really liked was that it broke all sorts of new ground on CGI technology. Totally unheard of in a small budget action film.

    • rmoonyose wrote on June 25, 6:38 am

I agree with Pete, Cyclops sucks. Hell, Jean Grey wasn't much better, but at least she was hot. Gambit is pretty overrated as well. Actually, as much as I've always enjoyed the X-Men, some of the worst characters are X-Men.

Now as for DC, Wonder Woman is horrible. Her character changes with every new writer, her villains suck, her powers suck, her origin sucks, everything about her just screams suck. I wish they would take her back to her creator's BDSM roots, at least that would make for something.

In before "well that's your opinion" whiny nonsense.

Runaways #30, RASL #2, and Secret Invasion Young Avengers Runaways #1

Up first it's a review of Runaway's #30. Alex is sad that this issue is Joss Whedon's last, but didn't think this issue lived up to his expectations. Next it's RASL #2. The guys love Smith's new project but hate that the issues are released so infrequently. Then its the new comic Secret Invasion Young Avengers/Runaways. The guys aren't sure about the non-traditional artwork of the book, love the story. During the Speed Round we look at Scalped #18, Ex Machina #37, Kill All Parents, Pilot Season: Genius #1, and Wolverine #66. Finishing off, Ian from Wisconsin writes in: Which Superhero have you always disliked? Alex, Justin, and Pete have some really good answers. Tune in to find out which superheros they hate the most. Be sure to watch The Stack three times a week, and send your comments and questions to tips@pulpsecret.com! This episode is sponsored by Zune Arts' Original Graphic Novel "The Lost Ones".
